Elderly Woman: Someone Is Trying to Take My Money

The Hoschton woman filed a report after falling for at least one scam.

An 83-year-old Hoschton woman is out $750, but failed to take a con artist up on a follow-up offer.

The woman contacted the Barrow County Sheriff's Office on Dec. 3 to report that someone was "trying to take her money." The woman admitted mailing a $750 check to a man a few months ago because he told her she would receive a check for thousands of dollars in return. The woman later received a check with a written amount of "Eight thousand nine hundred fifty six," but the dollar amount showed "$89.56." When the woman tried to deposit the check, her bank refused to accept it because of how it was written.

The woman said she has also received a call from another man informing her she would receive a check if she sent two checks in return -- one for $299 and one for $250. The woman said she did not send the checks.

The deputy advised the woman not to send any more money and to speak with her bank about the situation. The case is listed as active.
