Thanks for the insight and the backstory, Carol. I really appreciate it. The focus absolutely needs to be on the accomplishments of these athletes!

ReplyTo bring this back to what the article is about, the Mercer Island Girls Tennis team won their league tournament. I am happy for them, and wish them well in their next round at the district level. (Someone needed to say it!)
I also appreciate the contributed photo of all the women on the team and their coaches. I urge any other parents who were at the tournament to post their observations to the comments and post photos of matches by clicking on "Upload Photos and Videos."

ReplyThe new site might look quite different from what we're used to, but I think it will be a vast improvement over what we have now. But that's just me. (You can check out what's in store for us at http://stonington.patch.com/ ) TPTB definitely will want to hear your takes on the redesign once it launches.

Ann, to be fair, anyone on Mercer Island can post about their student achievements (and any other achievements) on Mercer Island Patch. We welcome everyone on Mercer Island to participate in this, and I would hope the community celebrates all families' successes.

On the article Where Does Mercer Island Rank Among Newsweek's "America's Best High Schools"?

Venice Buhain
3:39 pm on Wednesday, May 8, 2013
All these various rankings (Washington Post also has a "Challenge Index") use different methodology, which is why there's a difference. In fact, I was taking a look at how Mercer Island measured on US News and World Report's methodology, and compared it to another school that was ranked nationally (Olympia High School) and MI gets better scores in many of the criteria. The only difference perhaps is that MI has relatively few "disadvantaged" students, according to USNWR, and they factor that into their ranking. The Newsweek ranking takes into account graduation rate and college acceptance rate, which the USNWR doesn't include.

I second that, Jerry. I'm definitely ready for some sun and heat (though I don't consider temperatures in the 70s "heat").

On the article WSP Receives Complaints About Early-Morning Amber Alert

I didn't hear it. My phone might have been charging in another room while I slept overnight, and generally I don't get awoken by noises at night anyway. What does the alert sound like? Is it different from any other alert?

Thanks for the information about how to get donations to the Mercer Island Boys and Girls Club and for the link. Good luck on Wednesday! I hope that all the participating organizations benefit from this.
