  • On the article Do You Think the Selection of Pope Francis Will Result in a Revival of the Faithful?

As a Catholic, I watched with great interest as the bells range across Rome to announce that a new Pope was chosen. It was really heartening to see Catholics praying together, and celebrating together in St. Peter's Square. The rain couldn't dampen the holy spirit that moved among the people and inspired such joy. I have high hopes that Pope Francis will be a humble, kind and unifying voice within the Church. His first couple days have been inspiring, and I am looking forward to what is to come.

We live off of Thurmond Road, and also felt the explosions on Sunday. There were two of them, approximately an hour apart, in the afternoon. There was a loud boom, followed by a shock wave that could be felt through the ground and actually shook the house a little. We also could not identify where they were coming from, but I would generalize that they were West of us.

It felt much like an explosion at a quarry. We even speculated perhaps the railroad was doing something.

Some years are more effective than others. The vaccine is free at my workplace, and I get it every year. This year the flu has been particularly bad. My husband, daughter and son all got the flu (none of them had the shot). Even though I was with them the whole time, I never got it.

    It was worth it!

  • On the article Should Restaurants Give Discounts for Well-Behaved Children?

The restaurant can choose to do whatever they like, but I agree with the earlier posters who have said that good behavior should be expected and not rewarded.

That said, I try to make it a point never to judge other people on their parenting skills. You never know what kind of day a particular parent has had, or what they might be dealing with in their lives at the time you see them in a restaurant, or at a store, or anywhere else. Nor do I know the circumstances of the particular child. Maybe they are mentally challenged in some way I don't know about. I have three children. I do my best to discipline them and instill good manners and good behavior, and I correct them when they misbehave. However, I would hate it if people were to judge me only by my worst parenting moments. By and large, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and assume that people are doing the best that they can with the resources they have.

I work as a Detective supervisor in a sex crimes unit. I have seen far too many of the troubles that come from failure to institute and follow through on rules such as the ones of Ms. Hoffman. I applaud her rules, and hope that she follows through on them. I especially like the one about handing it over every night, and limiting use at school and in public.

These rules should apply to everyone.

Many of them were also former Law Enforcement Officers who retained a permit after retirement. I've put a number of very bad individuals in prison during my time as an Officer. While yes, there are probably other means of finding out where I live, I'd really rather not make it any easier than it needs to be.

Just because something is legal, doesn't necessarily mean it is ethical. I suppose this newspaper had a "right" to publish the information. But I think it was a poor decision that has the potential to put legal, law-abiding citizens at risk.

  • On the article Should Violent Games Be Reviewed and More Closely Regulated?

Video games are rated. It's my job as a parent to decide what I feel is appropriate for my children, and to monitor their habits and behavior. I do not need the government telling me (any more than they already do) what I may and may not teach my children. Will they also tell me what my children may and may not read? Perhaps violent books are the problem -- there was a lot of violence in Harry Potter and the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (war and slaughter, oh my -- we should ban them)! My kids enjoy National Geographic specials about violent creatures like dinosaurs and sea creatures. Are they going to grow into damaged teenagers and adults because I allow them to play "Velociraptor Attack" in the living room?

I'm perfectly capable of turning off the television and the computer all by myself, without government interference.

Thanks Tammy! This is number three for me -- I have a six-year-old and a three-year-old. I think being a parent is definitely one of the highest callings. I feel very blessed -- we have seven acres here in Barrow County, and the kids to get to learn the value of a good day's work and stewardship on a daily basis.

I know there's a system, but I still don't understand how you find insects, alive or dead, in "numerous locations" and get a 95 on your inspection. Ew!

If nothing else, it's a good reminder as to how important it is for parents to be involved with what their children are learning. My six-year-old loves non-fiction, and I am certainly happy to have her read as much of it as possible. However, I think that it is equally important, as she grows up, that she be exposed to excellent works of literature (and not just American Literature, but World Literature). If she doesn't get that at school, then it's my job to make sure she gets it at home.

Of course, I have a Masters Degree in English Literature. There's a chance I could be biased. :-) I do also want her to have a strong background in history, science and math.
