Don't know what happened to this discussion, but I agree with @Tammy, teachers on here were NOT complaining about teacher's salaries or even their jobs. The rant was about those that have preconceived notions of what teachers do without ever stepping in the classroom. (LIke having a free full summer vacation, great benefits, etc.) Read from the beginning. Even "Mr. Rant" himself @Ryan Brooks, changed his opinion once he heard from some of us. I moved from a state that paid a lot more and came here with a huge pay CUT (my choice) - so yes, I understand that concept. As you can see, I am not complaining about salaries.

A big THANK YOU goes out to JamesMichael, Tammy Osier, Brian Crawford and David Binder for your support and kind words!!! I thought I would be raked over the coals for my comments, but instead was pleasantly surprised to hear the opposite. I admire the time and dedication my fellow workers put into their teaching jobs here in Ga. and defy anyone to tell us we have "it easy" or "make too much money" or have "the WHOLE summer off" etc.
My rant for this topic today is those that say to me "All you do all day is play games and talk to kids." Yes, I am a speech/language pathologist, so talking is part of my job........but ......well, don't get me started! :)

I am an SLP in a public school and am amazed at how many people rag on teachers without ever stepping into a classroom. I am NOT a classroom teacher, I am concidered "support staff." We must attend evening functions (not paid) for PTA meetings, choir shows, gym shows, plus it is mandatory to show up for Saturday (not paid) picnics, fun fairs and other "community events." We have to go to continuing education programs (not paid) to maintain our licenses. We buy many supplies for our classrooms and even buy food for students who come to school hungry. Our summers are not "off." We are salaried for 190 days - paid on a 12 month schedule. We do not have PAID vacations. Working in an elementary school you deal with kids lying, stealing, bullying, disrespect, cheating, etc. just like a middle or high school. They are not all cute little darlings. However, most teachers I know deal with the stress and will state that they love their jobs. I totally enjoy my job. It is the politics and MOUNDS of paperwork (done at night or on the weekends) that drag me down. The job is much more demanding, stressful, and scary than when your Mom taught @Ryan. I know, I did the same job in the 80's and it was so much different then. Been there, done that, and am doing it again. Oh, and my "benefits" doubled in price this year, and they aren't the greatest. I haven't had a raise in over 5 years, plus have been fuloughed the past 2 years with more coming next year. No sour grapes here, just rantin'.

I don't know why audiologist got higher ratings than a speech/language pathologist (which is my profession) but I won't ague. They do make more $$ than me, maybe that is why! In my field I have been lucky enough to work various venues. I've worked in public schools, rehab hospitals, acute care hospitals, nursing homes, private practice and contract work. It is a great field of study. I recommend it anyone who likes helping people, variety of workplaces, and - talking! You need a master's degree, a 9 month internship, certification, and licensing. It's a lot to go through, but once you are there, many opportunites present themselves. The pay isn't as great as a physical or occupational therapist, but it's certainly not pennies.

I agree with you Marvin. I have a huge respect for all veterans, be they combat or not. Granted, I also agree there are degrees of service, but I honor them all the same. My father and husband are non-combat veterans, but still did very important jobs while serving during war times (just not in combat). My son-in-law is now active Navy and has been to war zones and non-war areas. They are all equal in my mind as someone who was willing to serve their country in time of war OR peace.
High regards to my family members and all those who serve our great country!!

I met my best friend in 9th grade and we have been friends ever since ( a LONG time!) We don't see each other much, because I moved to Ga. and she stayed in NJ, but we started taking a "girl's week" vacation every other year for the past 8 and have had a blast. We've been to Dallas, Nashville, the Bahamas and Vegas. Deciding where to go this year :) She's been here to visit and I see here whenever I go to NJ. I am a huge theatre freak, and if I won, I would invite her down to go see the play with me!

I work in an elementary school so all day long I hear either "your shoelace is untied' or "there's a spider on your shoulder" to which I go along with and get huge squeals of laughter when I look at my shoe or frantically swipe at my shoulder. But by the end of the day, it starts getting really tiresome!
Once in college I stayed out pretty late, got back to my dorm room and my rommates and her friends had taken apart my bed piece by piece and hit the parts all over the dorm. It took me hours to find all the parts, then put the bed back together......I was NOT a happy camper.......(but I got them ALL back, little by little...hehehe)
