I have been in many churches over my life and most of them have left a bad taste in my mouth. In fact, I stopped going all together a couple years ago. But when my husband lost his job, it was a wonderful group of strangers from Saddleback who reached out in kindness to me. I was skeptical of Saddleback for years because it is so large, but after visiting it, I was blown away by the kindness of the people and the humbleness of Rick Warren. He wears a plain black T shirt most Sunday mornings and stands outside the auditorium to greet folks and give them hugs as they walk out. He and his wife have done more for the community and the world than most people, and if anyone would do their research, they would find him the complete opposite of this sad greed and narcissism that has taken over our country. I don't agree with him one hundred percent on everything, but I still think he is totally relevant to all generations. Above all else, he teaches love and lives it out. This very thing is what is missing from so many churches and Christians today, sadly. He does not take a salary and gave most of his book money away. But if he had kept it all, who would we be to judge? It's not his fault he had a best seller that so many people related to. He is a smart man who thinks out everything he does, and while I do not put him on a pedestal, I do admire him and his ministry. And not that it should matter at all, but I have seen him in person and he has lost tons of weight and looks great.

Thanks for sharing your stories and input, everyone! I didn't know much about home births before doing this research, so I was really interested in what you had to share. It sounds like it can be a really rewarding experience for all parties!

Good points, Jana, Christy and Charles! I can't believe how fast my kids are growing up and I now understood what those sweet little old ladies meant in the grocery store when they stopped me and told me to enjoy every moment. I am striving for balance in this crazy rat race!

My mom's cat was just killed by three pitbulls that were running loose in her neighborhood. They then turned on her and almost injured her too. How many more injured people will it take before people realize these dogs should not be pets?!

I believe the way it works is that the site matches up families with nannies who are already going to be on that flight, so they would not be paying for her flight or lodging. They would simply be paying for the service while flying, probably equivalent of babysitting ...maybe 10-15 bucks an hour or so? So it could probably be pretty inexpensive and well worth the sanity it would save lots of moms! I am the biggest cheapskate of all time, but this is one idea that sounds pretty smart to me! :)

That is really interesting, mfriedrich! I have been curious to know when the whole spanking issue changed in our society. My kids toured the old school house at Knotts Berry Farm for a field trip and the guide explained how the kids used to pull a "switch" off the tree and endure a spanking as punishment if they screwed around in class. And at my private school in the 1980s, the principal had a huge paddle with holes in it hanging over his desk and had to use it a few times. I don't know if he had to have the parents' permission to do so, but interestingly, there was very little screwing around at that school. Ollie, I agree that there are many, many other ways to lovingly discipline kids when they are young. In my house growing up, spanking was only a "last resort" and done in the instance of lying or anything else my parents deemed very bad. I am grateful they loved me enough to take the time to direct me and discipline me, but I have not been a huge fan of spanking as a parent myself. I have many friends who were abused as a child and it breaks my heart. I think the line can be too fine sometimes and it is best to not go there at all, but that's just my two cents.
