Connecticut Strengthens Gun Laws While Georgia City Mandates Ownership — Which is Right?

Nelson, Ga., follows Kennesaw's example in mandating gun ownership for households, while Connecticut looks to strengthen gun controls — both attempts to improve safety.

After passing a law requiring gun ownership for each household, the little town of Nelson, Ga., was the talk of the nation this week. Monday's passage of the city's Family Protection Ordinance was reported by The Huffington Post, which noted the city council's agenda said the ordinance was a deterrent to potential criminals. It also said it is "opposition of any future attempt by the federal government to confiscate personal firearms." Kennesaw, Ga., passed a similar law years ago and Kennesaw Police Lt. Craig Graydon told Kennesaw Patch he was not surprised another city had opted for a similar ordinance. He said for years he had fielded calls from reporters around the world interested in the city's famous 1982 gun law. With some …

Should Georgia Pass Bill That Loosens Gun Restrictions in Bars, Churches, on College Campuses and in School Safety Zones?

HB 512 would allow guns carried by licensed individuals on college campuses, in churches and bars and within school safety zones, and it faces an important deadline Thursday.

In all the gun control news following the Sandy Hook school shootings, a bill in the Georgia Legislature would actually expand potential places where firearms could be taken. And that measure, House Bill 512, is facing a key deadline today, Thursday, March 7. The bill, also known as the Safe Carry Protection Act, would allow firearms to be taken onto college campuses, which include Barrow County's own satellite campus of Lanier Technical College on Athens Street in Winder, as well as in bars and churches.  Today is "crossover day" in the Georgia Legislature. A bill must pass the House or Senate to be considered by the other body. Otherwise, it is dead for the 2013 legislative session. How do you feel about this bill in the Georgia …

Study Says More Gun Laws Result in Fewer Deaths

The study results, published Wednesday in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine, are based on an analysis of four years of data on gun-related homicides and suicides.

Amid the ongoing debates on gun control, an analysis of four years of data on gun-related homicides and suicides suggests states with the most gun control laws have the fewest gun-related deaths.  The results of the study were published Wednesday, March 6, in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine. According to an Associated Press report, in states with the most gun control-related laws, far fewer people were shot to death or killed themselves with guns than in states with the fewest laws, the study found. And overall, states with the most laws had a 42 percent lower gun death rate than states with the fewest number of laws. The results are based on data gathered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2007 to 2010 and …

Is Biden Right About a Shotgun Being the Best Protection?

The vice president said recently he keeps two shotguns in his own home.

Vice President Joe Biden recently caused a stir when he told people at a roundtable discussion that if they were worried about protecting themselves at home, a shotgun would be more beneficial than an AR-15. This was being debated in the context of the Obama administration’s calls to renew the federal assault weapons ban. In a Fox News story, Biden was quoted as telling the group that he instructs his wife to use a shotgun in the event of a problem. He reportedly said he’s told his wife to walk out onto the balcony and fire two blasts from the double-barreled shotgun. “I promise you whoever’s coming in is not gonna,” Biden is reported as saying. “You don’t need an AR-15 (assault rifle). It’s harder to aim. It’s harder to use and in fact …

I've never been to a riot. You go to one or where one is expected and probable, you go at your own risk. You get caught up in one against your will, I guess you could pull out your gun and get off a few rounds before someone gets you. If you have a business in the slums, you already know what your problems are.   more ›

Senate Gun Control Hearings: Democrats Want Stronger Laws Limiting Sales, Republicans Say Existing Laws Under-Enforced

Local law enforcement officials, including Barrow and Gwinnett county sheriff's have expressed support of residents' right to bear arms as the U.S. Senate has started hearings on the issue of gun control.

The U.S. Senate began hearings on gun control Wednesday. About time or too little too late? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.  Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head two years ago at an outdoor appearance, told senators Wednesday, "You must act," according to a Los Angeles Times report.  The report says Democrats called for stronger laws to limit the sale of guns as Republicans insist existing laws were being under-enforced.  Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith told Barrow Patch earlier this week that he supports residents' right to bear arms, and on Wednesday, Sheriff Smith issued a statement via the Barrow County Sheriff's Office Facebook page reiterating that stance.  Subscribe to Barrow Patch’s …

Sheriff Takes to Facebook, Issuing Statement on Right to Bear Arms

The Facebook post reiterates what Sheriff Smith told Barrow Patch earlier this week about his stance on Second Amendment rights.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith told Barrow Patch earlier this week that he supports residents' right to bear arms. Today, Sheriff Smith issued a statement via the agency's Facebook page.  The post reads:  Here are some excerpts of comments Barrow Patch received on the original post, which can be viewed by clicking here.  "Thank-you for defending our Constitutional rights!" — N. Matthews  "I believe all people should have the right to protect themselves. They should have to be checked out first, make sure they have not committed crimes against others in their past." — Paula House  "Owning guns is my 2nd Amendment right and I will not give it up. If, we, the people, allow this to happen, the only people who will have guns will be criminals …

NRA Proposal for Armed Officers at Schools Backed by State Superintendent

On Friday, a National Rifle Association executive called for Congress to foot the bill for armed guards at every school in the country.

The National Rifle Association's suggestion of having armed officers at schools as a deterrent to mass shootings has found approval from Georgia School Superintendent John Barge. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “Having a school resource officer would certainly be ideal,” Matt Cardoza, director of communications at the Georgia Department of Education, said Friday after a conversation with Barge. “It makes the school a safer place, but the state would have to pick up a significant part of that cost. "Districts aren’t really in a position to pay for more than what they’re already struggling to pay for.” On Friday, a National Rifle Association executive called for Congress to foot the bill for armed guards at every school in the…

After Friday's Tragic Shooting, Gun Control is Back up for Debate. What's Your Opinion?

Friday's shooting massacre at a Connecticut elementary school has ignited the gun control debate.

Friday's shooting tragedy at a Connecticut school has again brought the topic of gun control to the forefront. Twenty elementary school children were among the 27 people killed when a gunman opened fire inside a kindergarten class at Sandy Hook Elementary. Adam Lanza, who killed his mother first, was identified as the shooter. He killed himself as a finale to the massacre. Immediately the debate turned to gun control with advocates saying stricter gun controls are obviously needed. This is the fifth time this president has had to visit the families of mass shooting victims. White House press secretary Jay Carney, however, said Friday "was not the day" to discuss gun control. But the president made it clear that this does bring the topic …

I'm not Karsten. I think trained law enforcement and military protecting and guarding our children is a better option than untrained, unscreened vigilantes. (George Zimmerman was a vigilante.) Lawmen and military are Americans, parents and people, too. Probably most of them are Christians. We guard our money, our courts, our celebs, but not our most precious treasures . . . our children?   more ›
