The jackpot for the Saturday, May 18, drawing is the second-highest in Powerball history.
If you thought $350 million was an impressive lottery prize, how about $550 million? With no winner in the Powerball drawing on Wednesday, May 15, the jackpot has soared even higher for the Saturday, May 18 drawing. Initially set at $475 million, lottery officials announced Thursday afternoon the jackpot had been increased to $550 million -- the second highest jackpot in Powerball history and the third highest in U.S. history. According to an Associated Press article posted by Fox News, lottery officials expect jackpot totals of this size to continue to climb in shorter amounts of time following a game redesign in January 2012 that increased the odds of winning some kind of prize but also lowered the possible number combinations to win …

No more rushing to the store for a last minute purchase when the lottery goes over the $100 million mark. Your ticket will soon be just as close as your computer. The Georgia Lottery Board of Directors voted Thursday to begin a plan to allow players to buy tickets for jackpot games online, according to media reports. MegaMillions, PowerBall and Fantasy 5 will be the initial offerings, according to lottery president Margaret DeFrancisco. The online sales would begin later this year or in 2013. "Our mission here is to maximize revenue for the HOPE Scholarship and Pre-K programs," DeFrancisco told WSB-TV. The lottery reported record sales of $3.8 billion in the fiscal year ending June 30, but rising enrollments and tuition costs have reduced …

According to an AOL Daily Finance report, getting rich from winning the lottery is statistically impossible. The same report says a recent report out of Bloomberg declares residents of Georgia some of "the biggest suckers" in America. Collectively, Peach State residents spent $3.4 billion on lottery tickets over the past year — an average of $470.73 per adult, which amounted to a full 1 percent of their annual income, ensuring the state a high ranking on Bloomberg's "sucker index". But it was its low rate of winning lottery payouts — 62.9 percent — that really pushed Georgia over the top and won it the biggest-sucker prize, the reports says. According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, of the 43 states that run lotteries, the …
