Georgia State Patrol reported that a Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy vehicle was involved in a wreck at 1:20 a.m. this morning on Georgia Highway 81 at Double Springs Road in Walton County. According to the trooper, a Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department vehicle ran off the road, struck an embankment and overturned several times. In a press release, GSP reported that nobody was around the vehicle when first responders arrived. They later located the driver, a Gwinnett County Sheriff's deputy, at his Bethlehem residence. He had sustained minor injuries. A female passenger was found walking near the crash scene. The driver, Robert Christopher Matt, 27, was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, failing …

There's no doubt the area around the intersection of Ga. highways 316 and 81 is growing and is ripe for even more development. The Barrow Crossing shopping center is well-established with a Publix supermarket, a Target store and other retailers. Gateway Cinemas 12 attracts movie-goers to the area, and Chick-fil-A is always a popular choice for dining. But is this area the "new Winder"? The Barrow Journal reports several businesses will open in a 14,000-square-foot planned retail center — Gateway Station — near the theater, including a sports bar, a pizza place and a music “listening room” offering live performances.
