Letter to the Editor: Not a New Practice to Change Rules to Prohibit Acceptance of African Americans into Institutions

In a letter to the editor, the vice president of the Barrow County NAACP discusses a recent nomination to the Winder-Barrow High School Hall of Fame.

Dear Editor,   We nominated Mr. Basketball himself, Mr. Jimmy Johnson, to the WBHS’s Hall of Fame because his 29.53 PPG scoring average is still the highest in Barrow County’s history. We thought that since Mr. Johnson was one of the many African Americans not allowed to attend the “Whites’Only” schools here in Barrow County, honoring his accomplishments would be a simple corrective gesture for us.   Even today what is morally right is sometimes not as easy as it should be.  We tried to contact all of the committee members (Sonny Morris, Jason Austin, Sammy Hale, John Mobley, Kay Turner, Elton Lynn, Ben Arms, Kevin Black, Hal Miller, Phil Bradberry, Justin Grant, Al Darby and Jerrie Hulsey).  Most members never responded back.  Of the 3 …

Friday Night Lights for Oct. 19, 2012: Winder-Barrow Versus Loganville and Apalachee Against Cedar Shoals

Get your Barrow County high school football preview here.

Playoff bids are not exactly on the line in Loganville tonight, but team pride is as the the Red Devils try to eke out a win over the hapless Winder-Barrow Bulldoggs. The Devils haven't won a game since defeating Walnut Grove in their home opener in early September, and have had zero success in the 8-AAAAA region (1-5, 0-4). They hope to change that luck tonight against the 0-6/0-4 Bulldoggs, who, despite having an extra "g" in their mascot's name, haven't won a game since October of 2009. Ouch. Last week, Loganville lost to Apalachee High School in a tight game, while Winder-Barrow lost to Flowery Branch in a not-so-tight game. Next week both teams keep it in-the region, Winder-Barrow heading home to scrap with Cedar Shoals; Loganville …

The Georgia Appalachian Center for Higher Education recently presented funds to two local schools.

Two Barrow County schools have received a slice of a $182,300 pie of grants awarded by the Georgia Appalachian Center for Higher Education. James Thompson, Appalachian Regional Commission state director, and Shirley Davis, GACHE director, presented “clearing-house” style checks along with “real money” to both schools during an event in September.  According to a news release, the schools will use these funds to implement GACHE’s model strategies to assist and encourage students to continue their education beyond high school by enrolling in and completing a post-secondary program.  Glenn Wilson…

Winder-Barrow's Football Coach Tells Local Newspaper He Won't Cooperate with Coverage

Mike Buffington, publisher for the Barrow Journal, posted an online opinion piece Friday titled "Crybaby coaches."

A recent poll asking readers why Winder-Barrow High School's football program has been unsuccessfull prompted the team's coach to to inform the Barrow Journal's editor that he and his staff will no longer cooperate with the newspaper's coverage, according to an opinion piece posted by Journal Publisher Mike Buffington on Friday.   Click here to read the full post, which points to coach David Wagner's three years with Winder-Barrow without a single win.  "Wagner is in a high-profile job in the community as a head football coach," Buffington writes. "He is a public employee, as are all the coaches in the school system. The football program uses tax-funded stadiums and training rooms. For Wagner to think he has no obligation to be under the …
