Winder Couple Takes to Streets Holding Signs on Election Day

The Richards stood at the intersection of East Broad Street and Broad Street on Tuesday hoping to encourage drivers to visit their polling places.

Winder residents Linda and Bubba Richards, along with their 7-year-old grandson Kellan, spent a chilly day outdoors to encourage Barrow residents to vote on Tuesday.  But Election Day isn't the only time the Richards take to the streets in Barrow with signs. Linda Richards said they will be out Christmas Day, Thanksgiving, Veterans Day and all patriotic holidays.  "We're both very patriotic people," she said. "We just feel very strongly about our military and what they do. We feel very strongly about our country and also about our religion, our God. Our signs always include the word God or God bless you."  The trio stood at the intersection of East Broad Street and Broad Street on Tuesday hoping to encourage drivers to visit their polling …

Residents Oppose Demolition of Old Granite Hotel

The Gwinnett Daily Post reports a group of residents plans to attend Tuesday's meeting of the Winder City Council, where members are set to vote on which company will handle the demolition.

Do you agree with the city of Winder's plans to demolish the Old Granite Hotel? What about plans to make the site a park? Tell us in comments. A group of residents who oppose the demolition of the Old Granite Hotel in downtown Winder plans to attend Tuesday's Winder City Council meeting to voice their opinion, the Gwinnett Daily Post reports. Council members are set to vote Tuesday, Dec. 6, on which company will handle the demolition of the 112-year-old structure, a project that will cost the city $200,000 in addition to the more than $400,000 the city spent stabilizing and salvaging the building since purchasing it in 2004. Bill Summerour, a lifelong Barrow County resident, sees the 112-year-old building as an opportunity, rather than …

Normally, I would scream to save an old building like this one, but this looks like it has way too much damage. I may be wrong, and if I am, by all means, then... try and save it. However... if it's going to bleed the city dry, (and also, what would they use the building for)... then it should be razed.   more ›

City of Winder to Unveil Monument at Public Safety Building

Residents are invited to attend a monument dedication ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 4.

The building that houses the Winder fire and police departments was named for John O. Mobley Jr. when the building was constructed in 1986.  Mobley served as mayor of Winder from 1980 to 1986.  According to Joan Mathews, the fire department's administrative assistant, the former mayor's name was never displayed anywhere in the building.  A recently-delivered monument that will be unveiled during an upcoming ceremony will change that oversight — the public is invited to attend a dedication ceremony at at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4. For more information, call the Winder Fire Department at 770-867-3212.

Members of the Winder City Council will vote Tuesday, Dec. 6, on which company will handle the demolition.

After spending more than $400,000 stabilizing and salvaging the Old Granite Hotel since purchasing the building in 2004, the city of Winder will pay out another $200,000 to have the structure demolished.  The Athens Banner-Heralds reports members of the Winder City Council will vote next week on which demolition company will handle the job. The demolition will require a considerable amount of engineering to keep the building from damaging other buildings or city streets. The newspaper reports the area will be turned into a pocket park as part of the city’s upcoming streetscape project and the demolition should be complete by early next year. Read the full story now. Do you agree with the city's plans to make the site of the Old Granite …

Don't spend money on making it a park. It will cost the city money to keep a park up. I think they should make it parking for downtown patrons.   more ›

Sunday Sales of Beer and Wine Start in Winder

Less than a week after Winder voters approved Sunday retail sales of packaged beer and wine, residents were able to stock up if they so chose yesterday.

Sunday sales of packaged beer and wine began in Winder yesterday, the weekend after voters approved the referendum. According to AccessNorthGa.com, this was the exception, not the rule, for other municipalities that approved Sunday sales — only a handful of other cities started allowing Sunday sales yesterday, and it could be weeks before residents in 50 cities and towns across Georgia can purchase alcohol on Sundays. In Winder, 707 voters approved of Sunday sales, with 592 voting against. Sunday alcohol sales was also on the ballots in Auburn and Barrow County. In Auburn, 155 votes were cast in favor of Sunday sales and 53 in opposition. Of 3,884 votes cast by county residents, 2,253 (58.01 percent) were in favor of Sunday sales, while 1,…
