Winder Mayor Says City has No Specific Plans for Property Recently Purchased

A local newspaper asserts the deal to purchase the Loganville Highway property was made in secret and violates the Georgia Open Meetings Act.

Winder Mayor David Maynard said there are no specific plans for the .45 acres off Loganville Highway that was recently purchased by the city.  The Winder City Council ratified during its regular business meeting Tuesday, Sept. 11, a vote taken in an executive session May 17 to purchase the property for $20,000 and authorize the mayor to finalize the acquisition. The parcel of land was purchased from the Young Men’s Christian Association of Georgia’s Piedmont Inc. formerly known as Winder Barrow Brad Akins YMCA Inc. "Our Water Department believes the site may be useful in the future, possibly for a pump station," Maynard wrote in an e-mail to Barrow Patch.  In an online post Wednesday, Sept. 12, the Barrow Journal asserts the city of Winder…

Winder Council to Discuss Proposed Name for Former Granite Hotel Site

The council will meet for a work session at 6 p.m. today.

The Winder City Council will meet for a work session at 6 p.m. today at the Winder Community Center preceding Tuesday's regular business meeting.  Council members will discuss the proposed name for the former Old Granite Hotel site. According to the meeting agenda, which can be viewed in full to the right of this text, the Winder Downtown Development Authority voted unanimously in July to recommend the site be named Richard B. Sen. Frank Ginn Receives Award at Winder City Council Meeting

The Georgia Municipal Association presented Ginn the award during a recent Winder City Council meeting.

Sen. Frank Ginn, who represents District 47 in the Georgia State Senate, has received a Champion of Georgia's Cities Legislative Award from the Georgia Municipal Association.  Ginn, a Republican, is one of eight legislators to receive the award.  "His efforts were instrumental is defending cities on more than a few occasions. Every time I turned around he was asking, 'How will this impact my local government?'" said Ashley Meggitt with the Georgia Municipal Association, who presented the award during the July 3, 2012, meeting of the Winder City Council. Winder Council Revokes Store's Alcohol License

Council members voted unanimously to revoke the alcohol license for the Sunoco station at 183 W. Athens St.

Barrow County residents will no longer be able to purchase packaged beer and wine at the Sunoco convenience store at 183 W. Athens St. in Winder after the Winder City Council revoked the business's alcohol license.  Council members voted unanimously during the Tuesday, July 3, 2012, business meeting to revoke the license after Winder Police Chief Dennis Dorsey asked the council to consider the matter, citing continuous problems with the store.   In March, after receiving numerous complaints, the Winder Police Department conducted an undercover compliance check for alcohol sales to minors at all convenience stores within the city limits.
