Saturday Mail Delivery to Continue as Congress Passes Legislation

The United States Postal Service had planned to end Saturday delivery of first class mail in August.

Congress has passed legislation requiring the United States Postal Service to continue six-day delivery, according to a Reuters report posted on The Huffington Post. The postal service announced in February its plans to end Saturday mail delivery in August, while continuing to deliver packages. The plan was expected to save $2 billion annually. According to the Reuters report, the House of Representatives gave final approval of the legislation, known as a continuing resolution, on Thursday. The Senate approved the measure Wednesday. Several polls have shown a majority of the public supports ending six-day delivery of first-class mail, the report says. The postal service, an independent agency not funded by taxpayers, has said it could need…

That said, I think funding pensions long-term was a good idea, especially in such uncertain times, but the USPS is struggling to meet the obligation congress put on them. If congress wants to keep the obligation, it needs to be willing to discuss the terms of the obligation.   more ›

Price of Stamps Going Up a Cent

The debut of the U.S. Postal Service's 46-cent Forever stamps brings rate changes Sunday, Jan. 27.

It's soon going to cost you an extra penny to mail a letter. The U.S. Post Office announced recently that the effective Sunday, Jan. 27, stamp prices will increase one cent to make way for the new 46-cent Forever stamp. The price to mail a one-ounce letter will increase from 45 cents to 46 cents, but the cost for letters weighing more than one ounce will stay the same, at 20 cents for each additional ounce. The announcement states letters under one ounce mailed anywhere internationally will cost $1.10 and postcard stamps will also see a one-cent increase, from 32 cents to 33 cents.
