Some legislators acknowledge the freebies can look bad, but they say the state's new ethics law will make it harder to mingle with constituents.
Georgia legislators who want to sit in the president's suite above the hedges at Sanford Stadium next year will have to pay their own way, thanks to ethics legislation signed by Gov. Nathan Deal last week. The law forbids elected officials from receiving gifts or event tickets exceeding $75. University System of Georgia lobbyists gave state and local lawmakers more than $14,000 in football tickets in 2012, the Athens Banner-Herald reports. The paper quotes state Sen. Well, here we are, on the brink of the SEC championship game, a game that many doubted the Georgia Bulldogs would reach this year, but which could propel them to the contest for the National Championship. The Bulldogs haven't won a national title since they beat Notre Dame in 1980, despite fielding one of the most consistently successful teams in the country. As Dan Wolken of USA Today put it, "There aren't many opportunities to put 30 years of frustration aside as a program, but Georgia is on the doorstep of one of them." If somebody's trying to sell you a ticket to Saturday's SEC Championship game between Georgia and Alabama, take a close look. It had better have two strips of SEC holographic foil at the top and more foil on the championship logo in the middle. You ought to be able to see the SEC logo and name in the foil as you move the ticket around in your hand. If you can't, walk away. The Bulldogs did what they needed against Florida last week in what henceforth shall be known as the Hot Potato Bowl, but it wasn't pretty. The game produced more ugly turnovers than a remedial pastry class. Credit Georgia's resurgent defense for Florida's sloppiness. After a public chewing out by safety Shawn Williams leading up to the game, the Bulldogs were relentless. Junior linebacker Jarvis Jones' performance alone was enough to help earn him semifinalist status for two national awards, the Maxwell and the Bednarik. The Bulldogs could coast to an SEC East title — if they can get past the undefeated Gators.
Game time for the Georgia/Florida game is 3:30 p.m., with CBS providing game coverage. So, in their last two games, Georgia got trounced by South Carolina and barely squeaked by the unimpressive Kentucky Wildcats. And yet, Bulldogs faithful are still talking about a shot at the SEC championship. Why? Because the Bulldogs have only one loss, and if they beat Florida on Saturday, a relatively gentle schedule gives them an opportunity to cruise to the SEC East title. The schedule is so favorable, an AP reporter suggested that Georgia "might be the most fortunate team in the nation." The Bulldogs are hoping for a strong performance against Kentucky, and some help from Florida, to get back into the SEC East title hunt.
Game time is 7 p.m., with Fox Sports Net providing game coverage. We knew Bulldogs fans would be rooting for Florida this week, so the Gators can beat South Carolina and restore Georgia's opportunity to win the SEC East division. Aaron Murray's even telling people to. Murray told the AP that Georgia faithful have "a free pass" to be one-time Florida fans and added, "I definitely am." UGA head coach Mark Richt also got into the act, telling the press: "I'm definitely a Gator fan this week." There may not be anything more important this weekend in Georgia and South Carolina than what’s fixin’ to take place Saturday in Columbia. There was some question at the beginning of the University of Georgia's football season as to whether Russ, a not-direct-line descendant who nevertheless ascended to the role of Uga IX, could give UGA the juice it needed to succeed. So far, Russ has met his responsibilities, as Georgia heads into its game against Vanderbilt with an unblemished 3-0 record. The Red and Black checks in with the pampered mascot as he continues his push through a high-pressure season. Here's what's being said about the Bulldogs and Tigers in Missouri's SEC debut.
Game time is 7:45 p.m. today and, according to UGA's schedule, the game will be shown on ESPN2. How do we know Georgia Bulldogs football is special? Because Delta Air Lines is changing its flight schedule just to make sure UGA fans get to Columbia, Missouri, in time for the Tigers' inaugural SEC game. It will be a learning process. Seth Emerson of the Macon Telegraph reports the two teams are virtual strangers. Neither squad even has a scholarship player from the other's state. Georgia head coach Mark Richt did interview for the Missouri job more than a decade ago, but the teams' only previous matchup was in 1960.
