Puppy Bowl 2013: MVP Goes to Schnauzer/Beagle Mix Marta

In one of the cutest sporting events ever played, puppies took to a mini field in Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl IX.

Puppy Bowl IX is now history, and the MVP — Most Valuable Puppy — has been crowned.  Of of the 63 puppies that competed in Sunday's pre-Super Bowl showdown, it was a female Schnauzer/Beagle mix named Marta who USA Today reports out-hustled and out-muscled dogs twice her size.  "Marta's tiny, but she's not delicate, and she is deceptively athletic, which kind of tricked the bigger dogs," USA Today quotes Daniel Schachner, who acted as "The Ref" on the field, as saying.  Possibly the best aspect of Puppy Bowl? Shelters see a spike in adoptions. The puppies participating in this year's event came from shelters around the country and, according to USA Today, all have been adopted. Puppy Bowl IX on Animal Planet Adds Hedgehog Cheerleaders

Puppy Bowl IX will air Sunday prior to Super Bowl XLVII.

Take 63 puppies playing faux football and add nine hedgehog cheerleaders in tutus and 21 kittens performing during a halftime show and you've got what might be an overload of cuteness — it's Puppy Bowl IX!  Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl IX will air from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Los Angeles Times sums up the premise: During the low-key football game, the puppies are placed on a 3-by-6 yard field with a bunch of plush chew toys shaped like footballs, ducks and sausages and are left alone to play. Eventually a puppy will manage to drag a chew toy into an end zone and the referee, Dan Schachner, will declare a touchdown has been scored.
