Drivers Asked to Avoid Local Intersection Due to Gas Line Leak

Crews are unsure how long the area will be closed.

UPDATE: The leak has been controlled and the intersection is now open.  Barrow County Emergency Services is asking drivers to avoid the intersection of Ga. Highway 124 and Ga. Highway 211 after a gas line was hit causing a leak.  "We have closed the intersection and evacuated nearby businesses until the leak can be contained," Lt. Scott Dakin, public information officer for Barrow County Emergency Services, said in a news release. Firefighters will remain on scene until the area is safe, and a gas company repair crew is responding at this time. Crews are unsure how long the area will be closed. County Public Safety Personnel Schooled in Advanced Burn Life Support

Apalachee High School students volunteered as "patients" for the class.

Barrow County emergency personnel recently learned the proper method to evaluate a patient with a serious burn, how to define the magnitude and severity of the injury and how to identify and establish priorities of treatment. The instruction came during an advanced burn life support class hosted by Barrow County Emergency Services on Friday, April 5, 2013. “This class is only taught 4 times a year throughout Georgia,” Training Officer Captain Brian Bullock said in a news release. “Barrow County Emergency Services was picked to hold the class because of our location and the fact that the class has not been taught in this area this year.”  Also included in the instruction were proper methods of managing the airway and support ventilation, …

Fire Prevention Grant Awarded to Barrow County Emergency Services

The grant money is to be used for fire prevention education and public information efforts.

Barrow County Emergency Services recently received a $1,700 grant from FM Global to be used in its fire prevention education and public information efforts. Specifically, the grant will be used to purchase a laptop, camera and accessories that will allow the department to develop fire and life safety presentations tailored to Barrow County and its residents. “We want to thank Battalion Chief Rob Nowakowski who wrote the application for the grant,” Lt. Scott Dakin, public information officer for BCES, said in a news release announcing the grant. “We also want to truly thank FM Global for this grant award. It is truly appreciated and will assist us in our fire and life safety efforts.”  According to the release, FM Global provides …

Thanksgiving Cooking Safety: Tips from Barrow County Emergency Services

According to the United States Fire Administration, an estimated 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings occur annually.

Some of your favorite holiday traditions — open hearths, candles and holiday cooking — can also increase the risk for house fires. “All of us at Barrow County Emergency Services want to remind our friends and neighbors that being prepared and practicing safety can make this a holiday season full of great memories,” Lt. County Firefighters Undergo Night Training at Rhodia

Firefighters will continue night training drills this week at Stepan Company.

This past week, firefighters with Barrow County Emergency Services participated in training at Rhodia Incorporated. “Over three nights firefighters came to Rhodia and went through a simulated emergency as part of their mandatory training,” Training Officer Bryan Bullock said in a news release. “The training was designed to give fire officers a chance to work on decision making skills and for all firefighters to perform several different tasks.” Over the three nights the firefighters were rotated through the scenarios. Two stations at a time would come together at the Rhodia plant and work together performing the required training. “We really want to thank Rhodia for allowing us to utilize their plant for this training,” Bullock said. “We …

Barrow County Students Return from Fall Break as Sheriff's Office Works to Make Deputies Directing School Traffic More Visible

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office wants drivers to be aware that both the changing daybreak time and the autumn angle of the sun can make it difficult to see while driving as students return from last week's fall break.  Deputies will be wearing highly reflective safety vests, posting warning signs in congested traffic areas and using vehicle emergency lights to improve driver visibility and driver awareness in school zones. County 911 Communications Center has Started Expansion to Connect with National Database

The completed process should result in a much more efficient system for law enforcement officers.

Barrow County Emergency Services has taken a step toward keeping the residents of Barrow County safer. Chief Dennis Merrifield said the county's 911 Communication Center began the process Monday of expanding its ability to obtain information from the National Crime Information Center. “When the process is complete it will result in a much more efficient system for the law enforcement officers in Barrow County," Merrified said in a news release, which indicates the current system law enforcement officers use has limited capability and requires communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services to enter the information relayed to them over the radio. Are Incidents of Aggressive Driving Increasing? Are YOU an Aggressive Driver?

Two separate recent incidents in Dacula, one involving a Winder resident, reportedly led to guns being pointed.

On Aug. 22, a Winder man was threatened with a gun after confronting another motorist at an intersection.  A Marietta man reported an angry motorist pointed a gun at him after he was momentarily distracted by an incoming phone call while driving near Dacula on Sept. 2. Yes if you have a handicap tag on your viehcle people will tail ride you..I just moved to Barrow county it's not as bad as Gwinnett.
