A PetSmart employee recently reported a liquid substance that appeared to be chili or soup had been thrown onto one of the store's front windows. That incident, reported to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office on Feb. 9, 2012, followed another in which a dead rabbit with a gunshot wound to its head was found outside the store's front door. The complainant asked that the incidents be documented in the event others occur and requested extra patrol during night time hours in light of the recent vandalism.

It developed from homesteads owned by members of the congregation at Bethlehem Methodist Church, established in late 1700s. When the Gainesville Midland Railroad ran between Gainesville and Social Circle in 1884, some forward-thinking brothers by the name of Beddingfield built the first store in the emerging town. This first store still stands today and once served as the post office.
