Auburn is Proactive About Remaining Residents' 'Home Sweet Home'

The city's website provides links for homeowners seeking ways to prevent foreclosure.

With the less than stellar news from a RealtyTrac Foreclosure Market Report released earlier this month indicating Georgia has “leapfrogged past Arizona, Florida, California and Nevada to post the nation’s highest state foreclosure rate in May,” many Georgia towns and cities are concerned with the prospect of losing a percentage of their residents to foreclosure and relocation. Boasting one of the most user-friendly and comprehensive websites in Barrow County, the city of Auburn once again proves it is ahead of the times thanks to an existing page devoted to “Preventing Foreclosure.” On this page, visitors to the city of Auburn website will find helpful links to websites like: If you are in the real estate or banking industry, or if you …

Winder Police Chief Asks City Council to Consider Revoking Convenience Store's Alcohol License

The city police chief cites numerous problems with a local Sunoco station, including employees selling alcohol to minors and the store paying cash for winnings on gambling machines.

Winder's police chief is asking city council members to consider revoking a local convenience store's alcohol license.  In a letter addressed to Winder City Administrator Donald Toms dated June 27, 2012, Chief of Police Dennis Dorsey cited continuous problems with the Sunoco station at 183 W. Athens St. in Winder.  In March, police conducted an undercover compliance check for alcohol sales to minors after receiving numerous complaints, and the store clerk, Mohammed Sirajuddin Ahmed, 40, of 3432 River Heights Crossing in Marietta, was arrested and charged with selling alcohol to a minor.  According to the letter, the Winder Police Department received information from a confidential informant June 23 that the convenience store was paying …

Bethlehem Residents to Vote on Sunday Alcohol Sales in July

The town council’s approval of alcohol referendum in March will soon go before local voters, and a second referendum may follow on the November ballot.

While many towns and cities in Barrow County took the question regarding Sunday alcohol sales before voters in November 2011, the Bethlehem Town Council made the decision in March 2012 to let local voters have their say on the matter during the July 31 local and state primary elections. If residents of the small Barrow town follow the example set by their neighbors in Auburn, Braselton, Statham and Winder, the referendum should pass — ending the long-standing ban on Sunday alcohol sales and allowing for the sale of beer and wine at convenience stores between the hours of 12:30 and 11:30 p.m. During the town council meeting earlier this month, Mayor Sandy McNab suggested there may be a need for a second referendum on the November 2012 …
