Rivermill Subdivision Resident Implores Barrow Citizens to Contact DOT About Turn Lane

An April 24 accident along Ga. Highway 81 at the subdivision entrance has heightened concerns about the safety of travelers.

Dear Editor,  After her second surgery, the critically injured party in the recent crash at Rivermill & Highway 81 is in recovery and battlng a lung infection while awaiting yet another surgery. It has been so heartwarming to hear the incoming stories of how many neighbors and friends have called the media, left messages for local politicians, and contacted the DOT office about the bridge project, as well as the project manager — Doug Fadool.  We are determined to never let an accident like this happen again. But ... It's not even close to over. We met with the DOT rep today. We are demanding a turn lane into our subdivision not only for our residents, but especially for the children of YARGO Elementary, HAYMON-MORRIS Middle, and APALACHEE…

Resident of Rivermill Subdivision Calls for Turn Lane at Entrance

The call for action follows an April 24 accident along Ga. Highway 81 at the road turning into the neighborhood.

Dear Editor, As a concerned member of the Rivermill community and family friend of the recent accident victims at Highway 81 and Rivermill Road I have been "stirring the pot" with my neighbors. This is not a role I enjoy. However, in light of recent events and the information uncovered I have no regrets for having done so — and continuing to do so. While one wouldn't think it based on the comments on recent articles, I am a very private person that does not interfere with my neighbor's business. I'm a firm believer in God being the judge of all of us ... I do not take it upon myself to judge anyone. That being said, because the victim's family told me point blank, "We must get the media involved, we must NOT let this happen to anyone else…

I want to let everyone know that there was a meeting with the RHOA, DOT rep, and other concerned residents (myself included) this morning. Allison Moravec made it crystal clear to the DOT rep, Trent Smallwood, that the RHOA will NOT sell the land unless the bridge project includes a turn lane for Rivermill. I also want to formally apologize to Allison for putting the spotlight on her as the …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Literacy Gala a Success Thanks to Barrow Community

The Winder-Barrow Coalition for Adult and Continuing Education has raised $19,000 to support adult education.

The Winder-Barrow Coalition for Adult and Continuing Education (WBCACE) held its 20th Anniversary Literacy Gala on Saturday, January 26, 2013. The event was deemed a tremendous success because of the hard work of many individuals and donations from the Barrow County Community.  Sincere thanks goes to Mrs. Lynn Hammond who chaired the 2013 Literacy Ball Planning Committee. Committee members Jannie Jennings, Lisa Maloof, Marilyn McKendrick, Sherri Perry, Janet Reid, Janet Segars, Angela Sims, Stephanie Sorrells, Gayle Steed, Allyson Summerour, and Susan Wages, worked tirelessly to make this an evening to remember and to fund the work of the Coalition. We are grateful to the many community organizations, businesses, schools and individuals …

Letter to the Editor: Not a New Practice to Change Rules to Prohibit Acceptance of African Americans into Institutions

In a letter to the editor, the vice president of the Barrow County NAACP discusses a recent nomination to the Winder-Barrow High School Hall of Fame.

Dear Editor,   We nominated Mr. Basketball himself, Mr. Jimmy Johnson, to the WBHS’s Hall of Fame because his 29.53 PPG scoring average is still the highest in Barrow County’s history. We thought that since Mr. Johnson was one of the many African Americans not allowed to attend the “Whites’Only” schools here in Barrow County, honoring his accomplishments would be a simple corrective gesture for us.   Even today what is morally right is sometimes not as easy as it should be.  We tried to contact all of the committee members (Sonny Morris, Jason Austin, Sammy Hale, John Mobley, Kay Turner, Elton Lynn, Ben Arms, Kevin Black, Hal Miller, Phil Bradberry, Justin Grant, Al Darby and Jerrie Hulsey).  Most members never responded back.  Of the 3 …

Letter to the Editor: Public-Private Partnerships Part of U.N. Agenda 21 Plot

Field Searcy, of Cobb County, led a presentation on regionalism and Agenda 21 for Georgia Senate GOP members last month.

Dear Editor: When I read on Page 185 of the March 2011 Cobb County Comprehensive Plan that the county supports the advancement of sustainable development policies as defined by the United Nations Division of Sustainable Development, I could no longer ignore that the U.N. Agenda 21 (A21) policies were real and thriving in America. The U.N. policies are detailed in a 300-page document along with the Local Agenda 21 Planning Guide. Sold as protecting the environment, sustainable development policies are more far-reaching than our fields and streams. A21 outlines plans for the control of land use, housing, transportation, food production, consumption patterns, water, energy, education, the role of industry and health care. Sounding familiar? …

Letter to the Editor: Why Try to Change Barrow County?

A Facebook user responds to a previous letter to the editor.

Editor's note: The following was posted on Barrow Patch's Facebook page in response to the Sept. 13 post "Letter to the Editor: Not Enough Diversity in Barrow County School System."  I think that when people move to Barrow County they need to leave the way we live alone, and quit trying to change us and our lifestyle. They need to leave our schools alone. There is a reason why people move out here, so why try to change it??? My family and I moved here ten years ago, and there is nothing that we would change. We love the quietness, the togetherness and the scenery. The schools are great, the teachers are great. For someone to come in and say there is no "diversity" in our schools, is greatly wrong. Why change what we have for their own …

Letter to the Editor: Not Enough Diversity in Barrow County School System

A Facebook user shared the following letter to the editor on Barrow Patch's Facebook page.

Dear Editor, I am not a regular reader of any of our local news publications and here is why. There is not enough journalistic integrity locally to even print the truth. I, Barnard Sims, addressed the Barrow County Board of Education on (9/4/12) the night our teachers were celebrated. Since no one bothered to print what I said, I referenced statistics from our schools systems website (there are only 30 African American and Hispanic teachers COMBINED in our entire school system of 14 schools and over 1,000 educators) confirming what is obvious when we walk into any of our schools. Frankly, it was clearer on that night while we were acknowledging our teachers. It was the "elephant in the room."  We Do Not Have Enough Diversity In Our Public …

Diversity: the state or fact of being diverse; difference; unlikeness; variety. Are you saying that the 1000 plus teachers we have all teach the same?? Please explain your expectations of “diverse” because I am confident in saying that there are NO 2 teachers the same so what other diversity do you need? So therefor, Mr. Sims it doesn't sound like you take pride in your community to offer a …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Apalachee Left Out of Game Coverage?

A Bethlehem resident asks the city of Winder to air both Winder-Barrow and Apalachee football games on its government access channel.

Editor's note: A call to Winder Television's editor/producer has not been returned to confirm changes to football coverage. More information will be posted when it becomes available.  Barrow County Schools have been in the news a lot lately for changes they have made. Well here is another change that the BOE had nothing to do with, but does affect one of its schools. The City of Winder has now decided that they would only pay to air Winder Barrow High School football games on their local television station TV 21, which airs on Comcast. Leaving Apalachee to either pay for their games to be broadcast or being left out all together. In the past TV 21 has always split the broadcast between the two high schools. TV 21 and the City of Winder …

This is the GOB (Good Old Boys) system at its best. Doing what it can to suppress any competition it has. They're the ones that divided the high school districts and now wished they thought about it more carefully. Doesn't matter cause more and more diverse the county has and will become. What goes around comes around.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Barrow County School System Changes are Mind Blowing

A Bethlehem resident says her sixth-grader can no longer ride a bus to and from school because the family lives too close to the school.

Hello, I am a concerned parent and resident of Barrow County, I have resided for the past three years in Bethlehem. My children are 7 and 11 years of age. My youngest is a current student at Yargo Elementary, my oldest will go to Haymon-Morris Middle School this year. For the most part I have had no complaints about the education they have provided thus far. However, this year has absolutely blown my mind with all the changes. I was appalled at the decision to reduce our school year to 160 days, regardless of what other counties are doing, this is a decision that is not in the best interest of our children. I spoke at that time, around May, with Dr. Wanda Creel. She had no news to provide me that was acceptable. I understand the decision …

Short term solutions- imperfect but immediate: Perhaps this site (or something like it) could provide a solution: http://www.carpoolworld.com/carpoolworld-communities.html Each school could set up a link on their respective websites for "no-bus" area parents to coordinate with other parents & volunteers- with obvious hold harmless liability disclaimers for the school. A bing search for carpool …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Sustainable Development is Buzz Word to Implement Agenda 21

It is a global scheme of the United Nations that gives it total control over 71 percent of the earth and its resources.

Sustainable development is bad for us. It is a buzz word used by the United Nations and the U.S. Federal Government Inc. in order to implement the Unconstitutional UN Agenda 21 project that was signed into law by President Bill Clinton and went into effect in 1994. It is a global scheme of the UN that gives it total control over 71 percent of the earth and its resources. And fully implements the Karl Marx Communist Manifesto of 1848: Read it here: http://www.libertyzone.com/Communist-Manifesto-Planks.html. Among the numerous unconstitutional laws that have been on America's books for many decades are the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, the National Firearms Act of 1934, the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968 that mirrors the Nazi weapons law of …
