The winners in this year's Jug Tavern Festival barbecue cook-off will be announced between 5 and 6 p.m. But before the awards are given, festival attendees can vote in the people's choice competition from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — or until samples run out — under the Jug Tavern Park pavilion beside the Winder Community Center. Rules are provided in the PDF document to the right of this text and tickets to sample the offerings are $5 each. Beginning at 5 p.m. today, the city of Winder will kick off a celebration of barbecue, music and more with the Jug Tavern Festival. The event will include arts and crafts and food vendors, a car and tractor show, hay rides around town and a barbecue cook-off. This evening's live entertainment features music from the band Pop Roxx from 5 to 6 p.m., Joe Hall and the Bottom Line Band from 6:30 to 7:30 and Bill Gentry from 8 to 10. New to the 2012 festival is the HOG Ride, sponsored by AMVETS. Proceeds will benefit the Winder Police Department’s Shop with a Cop Christmas program and the Winder Fire Department’s Empty Stocking Fund. The Barrow County Museum is also celebrating the festival and will be open extended hours during the event. …

Forget spring fever. The planners of two great Southern festivals already have their gears turning for summer. With just a little more than five months to go before this year’s Lazy Daze Music Festival and a mere seven months between now and the launch of the 2012 Jug Tavern Festival and Chili Cook-off, the city of Winder has hit the ground running in the new year. Only one week remains until the merriment of this year’s festival and barbecue cookoff begins.
Bearing the same name by which the city of Winder was originally founded in the early 1800s, The Jug Tavern Festival and BBQ Cookoff pays tribute to a long-standing and colorful history of community, good food, good music and good times over the course of a fun-filled weekend. The festival will be held from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. During the two-day event, the Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned cookoff promises to send the heavenly aroma of slow-cooked barbeque wafting up into the air right along with the sound of live music from the Trax Side Stage. If barbeque isn’t your cup of sweet tea, there will be plenty of other food vendors on hand to satisfy just about any festival food…

With the popular Jug Tavern Festival a little over a month away, the city of Winder wants Patch readers to know the city is still accepting applications for food and craft vendors and barbecue cook teams. Interested vendor parties can mail a completed application — available in both PDF and Word formats online — and associated payments to City of Winder Events, P.O. Box 566, Winder, Ga. 30680. Space is extremely limited, so don’t delay! Full payments must be made at least 10 days prior to the event in order to participate. At the time of publication, only eight slots remained for barbecue cook teams for the National Kansas City BBQ Cookoff portion of the festival.
