Two adults have been displaced following a house fire caused by a lightning strike. Just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2012, communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a house fire in the 1500 block of Union Court in Auburn. Engines 4 and 5, Med 7 and Battalion 1 responded to this fire. “Upon arrival firefighters found a single story home with moderate fire showing on the roofline,” Battalion Chief Mike Stoops said in a news release. “The fire was located in the back of the residence in the attic.” Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack and were able to extinguish the fire before it spread further. A Barrow County resident returned home Sunday, Oct. 16, to find a candle that had been left burning had started a small fire. The homeowner was able to use a fire extinguisher to put the fire out, which occurred at a residence on Azalea Drive. Firefighters and EMTs with Barrow County Emergency Services' Engine 6, Engine 1, Med 1, and Battalion 1 responded to make sure the fire was out and had not extended to any other areas. “With October being Fire Prevention Month, this fire highlights an important fire safety tip,” Barrow County Emergency Services Lt. A child playing with matches caused a house fire last week that shut down Ga. Highway 124 and displaced 10 residents, fire officials said. Barrow County Emergency Services' Fire Investigation Team determined the fire at 1129 Ga. Highway 124 on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, was started by a child. “The child was playing with matches while the mother was attempting to cook dinner. The child set a bed skirt on fire in a bedroom of the home,” Chief Investigator Blair Darst said in a news release. “The mother attempted to extinguish the flames by smothering the fire but was unable to and the fire grew in size. A house fire that required personnel with Barrow County Emergency Services to shut down a portion of Ga. Highway 124 on Thursday displaced a family of 10. Communication officers received a 911 call at 4:20 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, reporting a house fire at 1129 Ga. Highway 124. “Upon arrival firefighters found a large home that was heavily involved in fire,” Lt. A house that stood vacant for several years was destroyed by fire Sunday night. At 9:18 p.m. Sunday, communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received the first of numerous 911 calls reporting a possible structure fire on Harrison Mill Road near Ga. Highway 316. “Smoke was visible for several miles and flames were visible on Highway 316,” said Lt. Barrow County Emergency Services personnel believe a house fire Wednesday was set intentionally. Just before 7:30 p.m., communication officers received a 911 call reporting a house fire in the 800 block of Kendall Park Drive. Ladder 7 and Med 7 responded. “Upon arrival firefighters found the resident had been able to extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher,” said Lt. Scott Dakin, spokesman for BCES. “A small area of the vinyl siding on the outside of the home was damaged as a result of the fire.” Due to the location of the fire, the fire investigation unit responded to conduct an origin and cause investigation. Fire officials said the blaze was caused by a human act.
A home that was completely destroyed by fire today was vacant when it went up in flames. Fire crews with Barrow County Emergency Services arrived at home on Bird Hammond Road just off Atlanta Highway in Statham to find the single-story structure completely involved in fire. Engines 1, 3 and 6, Med 1 and Battalion 1 responded to the fire. With no water source near the location, Winder Engine 2 and a tanker from Jackson Trail Fire responded as well to shuttle water. The cause of the fire was determined to be a human act and is still under investigation by the Fire Investigation Unit and the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office.
