Have you already started buying gifts? Where in Barrow County do you recommend shopping?

The Thanksgiving turkey has been carved with any leftovers stowed away inside fridges, and the holiday shopping season has officially begun.  But according to a recent AAA Consumer Pulse Holiday Shopping survey, more than half of holiday shoppers, 51 percent, have already started buying gifts, compared to 46 percent this time last year. The majority of consumers, 62 percent, plan to spend the same amount of money on presents as last year, while 14 percent plan to spend more money, a 40 percent increase from 2011. More than half of holiday shoppers, 57 percent, plan to spend between $251 and $1,000 on gifts, while one in four, 23 percent, plan to spend up to $250, according to the survey.  AAA predicts a 10 percent decline in the number of …

What's the Top Item on Your Christmas Wish List?

With Halloween over, thoughts turn to the Holiday season and the obvious question, what would you like for Christmas?

With Halloween over and children, and their parents, slowly making their way through all that candy, thoughts turn to the next big haul - Christmas. What is on top of the Christmas Wish list this year? Technology is always a big one, as well as jewelry for her and tools for him. Another suggestion from Squidoo.com for the beer connoisseur, how about a micro-brewery unit? And for her, one suggestion from Squidoo.com is an electric corkscrew. But for everyone there is always that one special gift, you know the one. The one you've hinted for, sometimes even asked outright for - the one you're going to be really upset if you don't get. It may be something big, but it could be something very small, just very special. So what's the top item on …

Avoid Online Grinches on Cyber Monday

The Better Business Bureau offers tips on how to avoid giving online hackers and scammers a shopping bonanza this Christmas shopping season.

If you didn’t get gifts for everybody on your list on Black Friday or Small Business Saturday, don’t despair, there’s always Cyber Monday. In fact, according to shopping experts, that has now become the most popular day to shop for the holidays — and why not? That way you get to avoid all the crowds. However, shopping online opens you up to scammers and hackers just waiting to take advantage of this latest trend. “The convenience and ease of shopping online has replaced the hassle of going to the store for many people—but online shopping has its own set of risks,” said Fred T. Elsberry Jr., president and CEO of the BBB serving Metro Atlanta, Athens and Northeast Georgia. “Taking steps to avoid the fraud online will result in a much happier…

Target's Black Friday Deal on TV Lures Shoppers

A line of shoppers started forming outside of Target at Barrow Crossing before 5 p.m. Thanksgiving Day.

A Westinghouse 46-inch LCD HDTV originally priced at $549.99 and on sale for $298 had shoppers lining up outside Target at Barrow Crossing at 3:30 p.m. Thanksgiving Day. Dacula resident Alex Hicks was the first person in line and was tucked into a sleeping bag he had brought along at about 9:30 p.m., as temperatures dipped into the mid-40s prior to the store’s midnight opening. Hicks was followed in line by a quintet — Snellville resident Garrett Lussi, Monroe resident Alex Haney, Gainesville residents and siblings Thomas and Kathryn Maxey and Marietta resident Kayla Bly. Each planned to purchase a TV, while Haney intended to pick up bed sheets and possibly a laptop. The deciding factor on the computer? “If I can run to it fast enough,” …

Don't Get Caught Holding the Gift

The Better Business Bureau offers tips on Black Friday shopping to ensure you don't get caught with a gift someone doesn't want, and one you can't exchange.

Shopping List? Check. Credit cards? Check. Cash? Check. Car keys? Check. Now that you're ready to head out to join fellow shoppers in crowded malls on Black Friday, do you have everything you need? In a press release, the BBB said this knowledge could save time, frustration and, most importantly, money. “Consumers should know that in the state of Georgia companies are allowed to establish their own policies regarding refunds, exchanges and store credits,” the press release reads. “In many firms, no such policies exist. No company is required by law to allow a customer the right to return or exchange merchandise no…
