Winder’s A & P Store moved into a building on Broad Street on Sept. 13, 1939. The new location was outfitted with new and modern electrical equipment, new counters and shelves and more floor space.

Industrial arts students from Winder-Barrow High School were honored during an awards banquet at the fourth annual Convention of the Georgia Association of Industrial Art Clubs on April 3, 1966. Wayne Deaton received second place in the drafting contest, Bruce Russell was elected state secretary for the club and Harvey Turk was elected state parliamentarian.

The Winder News announced in its Jan. 29, 1975, issue that telephone directories would be available one per residential household due to a shortage of paper. In previous years, the directories were distributed on a per-telephone basis. Businesses would continue to receive the same number of directories as in previous years.

On Jan. 28, 1937, The Winder News published the first installment of a new serial story, The Garden Murder Case. “Good fiction should form a part of every person’s reading,” an article introducing the featured read. The story was written by Willard Huntington Wright under the pseudonym S. S. Van Dine, who the paper called one of the outstanding writers of mystery stories in the country. The Garden Murder Case was the ninth in a series of mystery novels about fictional detective Philo Vance.

The Winder-Barrow boys basketball team defeated 5-AAA Marist in a close game Jan. 14, 1995. The 64-60 win improved the Bulldoggs’ record for the season to 11-4 under coach Ron Garren. Marist took the lead with more than a minute to play but Winder used the pressure period to its advantage, forcing three consecutive turnovers and scoring on all three steals to regain the lead and capture the win. The Bulldoggs were led by Diwon Watson with 25 points. As reported by The Winder News

A man died after his vehicle was struck by a train.

A 43-year-old Carl resident was killed after his pick-up truck was struck by a train traveling the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad tracks running parallel to U.S. Highway 29 on Jan. 11, 1973. Sonny Jackson died as a result of injuries sustained during the accident.

A four-month undercover investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation resulted in 29 local drugs arrests in a single day Jan. 9, 1986, with officers from the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office and the Winder, Auburn and Statham police department assisting in the arrests. Those arrested were charged with the sale of suspected marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine.
