Should 5-Year-Olds Own Guns?

A Kentucky boy accidentally shot his 2-year-old sister to death with a gun he got for his birthday.

Two-year-old Caroline Sparks loved playing outside, singing, and her 5-year-old brother, who accidentally shot her to death last week with the .22-caliber rifle he got for his birthday. CNN reports the children's mother had stepped outside for just a few minutes when the accident occurred. It was the third time in about a month that someone was shot to death by a child under 6. The boy's gun was a Crickett rifle marketed specifically for young children as "my first rifle," the CNN story said. The gun stocks come in colors such as pink and blue. Officials in Kentucky noted that gun ownership among young children is common in the area. “It’s a normal way of life, and it’s not just rural Kentucky, it’s rural America – hunting and shooting and…

Logan,I have two questions: Why did you shoot your brother 7 times (I am thinking it possible your brother needed shooting)? Why did your dad wait until 5 years after that to send you to an NRA Safe Hunter Class? Just hafta ask, thanks.   more ›

Barrow County Sheriff Supports Residents' Right to Bear Arms

Sheriff Jud Smith weighs in on the topic of gun control.

Gun control has been a much discussed topic in the media lately, with Gwinnett County's sheriff going as far as saying he encourages law-abiding citizens to acquire firearms.  Barrow Patch asked Sheriff Jud Smith what his stance is on gun control.  "As the Sheriff of Barrow County I will fully exercise my power to protect and defend the Constitutional rights of the citizens of Barrow County," Smith wrote in an e-mail. "I will not stand by and allow laws to be passed that will infringe on the rights of law abiding citizens ... and [their] 2nd Amendment rights."  The U.S Constitution's Second Amendment says, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be…

Around the Region: Gun Range to Serve Alcohol, DVD-Related Stabbing and Alleged Sexual Misconduct

A look at top Patch stories from around Georgia.

Man Allegedly Stabbed Over Argument About Pirated DVDs – Norcross Patch A 24-year-old man from the Norcross area told Gwinnett police he was stabbed in the back by someone selling pirated DVDs after he accused the person having "poor quality" products. On Sept. 4, the man spotted another man who he knew sold pirated DVDs, so he walked over to buy some. During their discussion, the two started arguing about the quality of the DVDs, mainly because the consumer accused him of selling poor-quality DVDs in the past. At the end of the conversation, the seller went back to his car for what the consumer thought was more DVDs. When the seller returned, though, he allegedly attacked the consumer and stabbed him in the back. Norcross Patch has more …
