Barrow County Emergency Services recently received a $1,700 grant from FM Global to be used in its fire prevention education and public information efforts. Specifically, the grant will be used to purchase a laptop, camera and accessories that will allow the department to develop fire and life safety presentations tailored to Barrow County and its residents. “We want to thank Battalion Chief Rob Nowakowski who wrote the application for the grant,” Lt. Scott Dakin, public information officer for BCES, said in a news release announcing the grant. “We also want to truly thank FM Global for this grant award. With chilly overnight lows setting in, Barrow residents are staying warm by turning up thermostat dials, plugging in portable space heaters and lighting fires in fireplaces. Georgia's Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph T. Hudgens wants to remind Georgians of some heating tips to help keep homes safe this winter. “Unfortunately, the number of home fires tends to go up as the temperature drops,” Hudgens said in a released statement. “So, while you’re keeping warm, please also keep fire safety in mind.” Here are some tips to follow to help keep your home and family safe during colder months.

A Barrow County resident returned home Sunday, Oct. 16, to find a candle that had been left burning had started a small fire. The homeowner was able to use a fire extinguisher to put the fire out, which occurred at a residence on Azalea Drive. Firefighters and EMTs with Barrow County Emergency Services' Engine 6, Engine 1, Med 1, and Battalion 1 responded to make sure the fire was out and had not extended to any other areas. “With October being Fire Prevention Month, this fire highlights an important fire safety tip,” Barrow County Emergency Services Lt.
