Golf cart wiring is being blamed for a May 11 fire that caused extensive damage in the garage area of a home in the 900 block of Highway 211. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire conditions in the garage of the home. “They also found fire in a bedroom on the second floor of the home," stated Barrow County and Emergency Services Public Information Officer Lt. Scott Dakin in a press release. "Firefighters made a very fast aggressive attack on the fire and were able to quickly bring it under control.” There was smoke damage throughout the home, Dakin added. Communications officers with Barrow County Emergency Services began receiving 911 calls about the fire at 8:06 a.m. and were told residents were still inside. Britani Allison of Bogart was driving by the house, located at 715 Hog Mountain Road, with her children when she saw the fire. Two employees with Barrow County Emergency Services have been promoted. John Skinner has been promoted to deputy chief of the department and Penny Clack has been promoted emergency management coordinator. “It is my desire to assemble an effective management team to lead Barrow County Emergency Services,” Chief Dennis Merrifield said in a news release announcing the promotions. “I am pleased with the appointment of John Skinner and Penny Clack. They will be key partners in achieving this goal.” Skinner has more than 15 years of fire and emergency medical service experience. Firefighters and emergency personnel with the city of Winder and Barrow County Emergency Services responded Sunday to a reported church fire at Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit in Winder. At 11:06 a.m. April 24, Winder engines 1 and 2, Winder Ladder 1 and Barrow County Med 3 were dispatched to 71 W. Candler St. in response to the reported fire. Winder Engine 1 arrived on scene and found light smoke showing from the basement. Because of the potential fire load in the building and exposure problems, Barrow County Truck 7 and Barrow County Engine 6 was asked to respond as well. Two adults and three children were displaced Monday, April 18, as a result of a fire that ignited in the family's garage. Communications officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a fire at 1421 Red Oak Way. Engines 1 and 6, Med 1 and 6 and Battalion 1 responded. “First arriving firefighters found fire and smoke coming from the garage area of the home,” Lt. Lightning has been the cause of several house fires in Barrow County in the past few weeks. The most recent occurred April 15, when a lightning strike ignited a fire in the basement of a home on Manning Gin Road. “We are entering the time of year when storms are becoming more frequent,” Lt. Rob Nowakowski said in a news release issued by Barrow County Emergency Services. “Everyone needs to be aware when thunderstorms are in the area. A family has been displaced after an early morning fire April 9 damaged their home. At 2:12 a.m. April 9, communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a structure fire at 1023 Cooks Road. Engines 1 and 6, Med 1, Battalion 1 and Deputy Chief John Skinner responded and found a double-wide trailer that was heavily involved in fire. “Firefighters found fire in over fifty percent of the home,” Lt. Lightning struck two structures in Barrow County during thunderstorms Saturday night. At 11:30 p.m., communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received the first call reporting a possible house fire in the 1400 block of Flanagan Mill Drive. “Firefighters were dispatched and found a house that had suffered a lightning strike on the corner of the home,” said Lt. Scott Dakin, spokesman for BCES. Engines 4 and 5, Med 5 and Battalion 1 responded. Upon investigation, firefighters no fire within in the home. Barrow County Emergency Services responded to multiple fires and accidents from March 18 through 24. A total of 3,155 calls were handled by communication officers through the dispatch center. Of those calls, 1,473 came through the 911 lines, which resulted in 1,193 calls being dispatched. Of those, 201 calls were handled by firefighters and EMTs with the department. An outdoor fire Monday reignited Tuesday creating a blaze that damaged two vehicles and an outbuilding at a Statham location. At 4:54 p.m. Tuesday, communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a grass fire that was spreading toward an outbuilding at 267 Jones Road in Statham. Engine 1 and Med 1 responded and found a ½-acre grass fire that had ignited an outbuilding. “Firefighters found the building about 30 percent involved and a vehicle burning as well,” said Lt. Scott Dakin, spokesman for BCES. “The fire was also spreading to other buildings.” Firefighters worked quickly to control the fire and protect exposures.
