Georgia Department of Transportation work crews will again be in downtown Winder overnights this week. The DOT announced work along Ga. Highway 11/Broad Street that will involve the installation of new water and sewer lines. A single lane closure will begin at 9 p.m. and continue to 6 a.m. the next day, Tuesday night through Friday morning. No lane closures are planned Monday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights. Tuesday night, the outside northbound lane will be closed from Midland Avenue to Candler Street. The Winder City Council will hold a called meeting today, March 19, and will fill a vacant council seat that was held by the late Councilman Charlie Eberhart. Eberhart, who died Jan. 30, 2013, after battling brain cancer, held the council's Ward 2 seat on the for 22 years, making him its second longest-serving member at the time of his death. The council will also vote on the approval of a municipal court judge appointment and recommendations to award bids on the East Athens Street culvert project and the purchase of furniture for the city's building on East Midland Avenue. Winder-Barrow Community Theatre recently presented its annual Christmas show at the Winder Cultural Arts Center, and a portion of proceeds from the production was donated to a local nonprofit organization. Each year, the theater group supports Barrow County Family Connection/Communities In Schools with a donation, and this year's contribution was $516 that will go toward purchasing Christmas gifts for local children.
