Commission Chairman Running for State Senate Seat Opposes TSPLOST

The Athens Banner-Herald reports Danny Yearwood said Tuesday night during a Jackson County Chamber of Commerce forum that he opposes the tax.

Barrow County Board of Commissioners Chairman Danny Yearwood said Tuesday he opposes the proposed transportation sales tax, according to a story by the Athens Banner-Herald.  Yearwood, who is not seeking re-election as commission chairman and is instead running against state Sen. Frank Ginn to represent District 47, said he opposes the 1 percent tax, even though he helped put together the list of Northeast Georgia projects it would fund, including 13 projects in Barrow County.  “Do I support tax?” Yearwood is quoted as saying. “No, I do not support more tax.” The proposed transportation sales tax referendum has gotten people talking. If passed, the 2012 TSPLOST bill is expected to generate more than $18 billion statewide over a 10-year …

Barrow Journal Reports Commission Chairman Recently Engaged in Several Confrontations

The local news publication reported Chairman Danny Yearwood recently had confrontations with a county resident and a commissioner.

Despite opposition from Chairman Danny Yearwood, the Barrow County Board of Commissioners voted to allow Sheriff Jud Smith to purchase new patrol vehicles. The Barrow Journal reports Yearwood has engaged in several confrontations recently, including what the paper calls an angry exchange with Commissioner Steve Worley over the issue of purchasing patrol cars and a confrontation with a resident who addressed commissioners during the public comment portion of a county meeting. Chairman of Barrow Board of Commissioners May Seek Re-election

Despite significant changes in the position of commission chairman, Danny Yearwood may seek re-election, according to a story by the Barrow Journal.

The Barrow Journal reports Danny Yearwood, chairman of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners, may seek re-election in 2012, despite changes in the position. The chairman, who currently manages the county government, will shift to a part-time position with a reduction in pay as a county manager begins overseeing day-to-day county government operations. The chair will have full voting powers alongside commissioners but will not retain a veto. The changeover will take place in January 2013.
