The city continues its expansion to Ga. Highway 316.
Members of the Winder City Council voted Tuesday, Jan. 8, to annex several properties into the city limits, including five along Exchange Boulevard. Exchange Boulevard, a roadway that runs parallel to Ga. Highway 316, includes the future site of Gateway Station, a 14,000-square-foot development currently under construction. The following are descriptions of each of the properties along Exchange Boulevard, and all were approved for annexation and rezoning by council members: The city council previously vote to annex and rezone five properties along Exchange Boulevard in early December, including the property where Athens Regional First Care, an urgent health care facility, is located. Those annexations became effective Jan. 1, 2013. What…

Upon study of consolidation, it might prove to be a big mistake.
With changes in the city limit borders of Winder, one cannot help but wonder when these annexations will end. There is no doubt that Barrow County is on the move and the years ahead look good with continued projected growth in business, industry and residences. After seeing empty land for so many years along the 316 corridor, we are beginning to see growth occur. Some people welcome the growth, while others respond in a negative way regarding any type of growth. Growth brings change. With new businesses, retail, restaurants and smaller specialty shops opening we will have new people moving into the county buying houses. More out-of-county tags can be spotted in the parking lots of the shopping centers and large box stores in our county …

Many questions must be asked and real answers sought before the county goes down that road. There are several areas in GA. that have gone down the road to consolidation, much can be learned from their experience. School systems consolidated many years ago in some counties, including Barrow.   more ›

Public safety and service delivery are cited as the primary reason the city is looking to extend its city limits to Ga. Highway 316.
A recent report by the Barrow Journal that the city of Winder has begun an "aggressive annexation plan" to extend its city limits all the way to Ga. Highway 316 has been confirmed by Mayor David Maynard and Winder City Administrator Donald Toms. Toms responding to questions from Barrow Patch with the following e-mail. As you may be aware the City provides natural gas to the majority of Barrow County and around 70% of the water. As a utility provider it is easier to regulate our utilities if they were within our jurisdiction. With this said we are looking to clean up our boundaries. In regards to 316, it is a natural assumption that this is the area of high commercial growth. As the provider of water and natural gas we would like to be …

The locally-based architectural firm has been awarded a renovation design services contract following a recent request for proposals.
Last month, Barrow Patch reported a request for proposals was issued bycity of Winder as the municipality sought qualified architects and engineers for the renovation design of an existing 23,500-square-foot building in the downtown area. Located at 25 E. Midland Ave., the building once served as a People’s Bank Operations Center. Following the end of the RFP submission period June 15, the city recently announced that the contract has been awarded to Winder-based Bramlett Associates Architecture. With their base-of-operations situated at 122 N. Broad St. — right around the corner from the building at the heart of the project, the city of Winder didn’t have to look far to find the ideal candidate. In a website post on July 18, the city …
