Barrow County's Unemployment Rate Shows Slight Decline from October to November
The Georgia Department of Labor recently released preliminary unemployment rates for November in Northeast Georgia.
The preliminary unemployment rate for Barrow County in the month of November, 7.4 percent, showed a slight decline from October's rate of 7.7 percent, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. The preliminary unemployment rate in the Northeast Georgia region declined to 7.5 percent in November, down one-tenth of a percentage point from 7.6 percent in October. The rate was 8.5 percent in November 2011. The GDOL reports the rate declined as a result of fewer new layoffs, represented by first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits. Is Consolidated Government in Barrow County's Future?
Upon study of consolidation, it might prove to be a big mistake.
With changes in the city limit borders of Winder, one cannot help but wonder when these annexations will end. There is no doubt that Barrow County is on the move and the years ahead look good with continued projected growth in business, industry and residences. After seeing empty land for so many years along the 316 corridor, we are beginning to see growth occur. Some people welcome the growth, while others respond in a negative way regarding any type of growth. Growth brings change. With new businesses, retail, restaurants and smaller specialty shops opening we will have new people moving into the county buying houses. More out-of-county tags can be spotted in the parking lots of the shopping centers and large box stores in our county …

Many questions must be asked and real answers sought before the county goes down that road. There are several areas in GA. that have gone down the road to consolidation, much can be learned from their experience. School systems consolidated many years ago in some counties, including Barrow. more ›

Top Candidate for County Manager is Former Gwinnett Administrator
The Board of Commissioners is scheduled to vote on the appointment of a county manager at its Dec. 11 meeting.
Last November, Barrow voters chose a county manager over a chairman managing its county government. Come Dec. 11, members of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners are set to vote on the appointment of that manager, who will take on oversight of the county government Jan. 1. The Barrow Journal reports the top candidate for the job is Jock Connell, a former county administrator for Gwinnett County who served as interim administrator for Hall County. The Georgia Department of Labor recently released information on unemployment rates in Northeast Georgia
Barrow County's unemployment rate for the month of Octover was 7.7 percent, in line with the the preliminary unemployment rate in the Northeast Georgia region, which was at 7.6 percent, down one-tenth of a percentage point from 7.7 percent in September. The rate was 9.1 percent in October 2011. Statewide, there were 3,971,700 jobs in October, up 36,000, or nine-tenths of a percentage point, from 3,935,700 in September. Barrow County has 'Arrived'
Now I can shop and eat in Barrow County without having to drive east, west, north or south to find what I need.
With news coming at us from all sides during the election, someone suggested they would be glad when the election is over so we can hear other news. While it is true during the campaign we do hear about one position or candidate or another. After the election, with the twenty-four hour news cycle we will continue to hear about governments, worldwide, small and large. In the middle of the news during this presidential election cycle, I have been given great hope with the announcement about expanded business openings in Barrow County. I am in the crowd of folks who love to drop by a fast food establishment and grab a quick meal to eat in the car on the way to my next speaking engagement, or just take it home for a quick lunch or dinner. …

Attorneys Successful in Removing Barrow County Man from Sex Offender Registry
The man did not have any sexual or felony conviction, but ended up on the registry as a result of having consensual sex with someone under the age of consent when he was young.
Monroe attorneys Crawford and Boyle reported that last week their law offices were successful in getting the name of a Barrow County man removed from the sex offender registry. Although attempts to do so are not uncommon, the difference in this case was the man had ended up on the registry despite never having been convicted of any sexual or felony offense. According to a newsletter from the law firm, their client ended up on the registry as a result of a decision he made when he was young to have sex with someone under the age of consent. “While she was fine with it, her mother was not, resulting in charges being brought,” the newsletter reads. “The client used first offender provisions to keep the charge from becoming a conviction; …
