Dear Editor, Local residents are outraged after the Barrow County Board of Education "flip flopped" on naming the new school after a long time prominent African American Educator, Professor L. D. Sims. Professor Sims was educated at UGA, taught and Principled at the segregated Glenwood High in Barrow County, and he also served for many years on the Barrow County Board of Education. According to the President of the Glenwood Alumni Association, Johnnie Lay Burkes, the Barrow Board of Education had agreed to name the next school after something of Black Heritage, 12 years ago when the Board chose the name of the last new school. A Winder-Barrow High School science teacher is one of 10 finalists for 2014 Georgia Teacher of the Year. Brandon Mitchell, the Barrow County School System's 2013 Teacher of the Year, was chosen from a pool of 155 applicants. Over the next several weeks, a panel of judges will conduct video observations and interview each of the finalists. The winner will be announced at the Georgia Teacher of the Year banquet May 3, 2013, at the Georgia International Convention Center. The spelling bee, held Friday, Feb. 1, lasted 15 rounds before the Kennedy Elementary School fifth grader was named the winner after correctly spelling the word paucity.
Beverly Amoah, a fifth grader at Kennedy Elementary School, will represent the Barrow County School System at the District 3 spelling bee competition Saturday, Feb. 23 at North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee. Daniel Londono, a fourth-grade student at Bramlett Elementary School, was named runner-up and will compete in the district spelling bee if Beverly is unable to attend. The Barrow County School System will be conducting lockdown drills at each of its schools throughout the day. The Barrow County Sheriff's Office advised parents and families of students about the drills on the agency's Facebook page. According to the post, drill times will be staggered and should last about 30 minutes. Drills have been organized with all school staff and principals. Questions or concerns regarding these drills should be directed to students' respective schools or the Barrow County School System by calling 770-867-4527.
