An initial investigation into a home fire Saturday morning determined the blaze was caused by arson. A deputy with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office on patrol on Princeton Drive found smoke coming from a home in the 1400 block just before 8:30 a.m. and called the fire in, at which time communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services dispatched firefighters. “Upon our arrival we found smoke coming from the eaves of the house,” Lt. Darryl Skinner, who was in charge of the scene, said in a news release. “We made entry into the house and found heavy smoke in the interior of the home making for low visibility.” Firefighters worked quickly to bring the fire under control, but the house suffered extensive damage. Barrow County Emergency Services personnel responded to multiple fires this week, including a residential fire, a blaze at a local middle school and a business fire. At 3:25 a.m. Wednesday, communication officers received a 911 call reporting a fire at 1093 Dee Kennedy Road. “Upon arrival of firefighters we found the home to be heavily involved with fire through the roof,” Battalion Chief Rob Nowakowski said in a news release. “We had to fight the fire from the outside of the home due to the amount of fire.” Firefighting efforts were hampered by the collapse of the roof and floor into the basement of the home, which resulted in extensive damage. Six adults were displaced as a result. The American Red Cross responded to assist the adults. …

At 7:53 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a structure fire in the 200 block of Ballast Trail. “Upon arrival of firefighters we found a home that was heavily involved in fire,” Battalion Chief Rob Nowakowski said in a news release. “Due to the amount of fire we went into a defensive mode and fought the fire from outside the home.” Engine 1, Engine 6, Med 1 and Battalion 1 were dispatched to the location. A grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has allowed firefighters with Barrow County Emergency Services to purchase new equipment. The department was able to put new chain saws, quick-cut saws, positive pressure fans and multi-gas monitors on all firefighting apparatus. The chain saws and quick-cut saws are used in many areas of ventilation as well as search and rescue efforts. The positive pressure fans are used to remove smoke during and after a fire, allowing the firefighters to better perform firefighting efforts. Barrow County Emergency Services is already preparing for possible winter weather and the impact that weather could have on Barrow — the county's emergency operations center has been activated. Barrow County Emergency Services recently received a $1,700 grant from FM Global to be used in its fire prevention education and public information efforts. Specifically, the grant will be used to purchase a laptop, camera and accessories that will allow the department to develop fire and life safety presentations tailored to Barrow County and its residents. “We want to thank Battalion Chief Rob Nowakowski who wrote the application for the grant,” Lt. A Barrow County firefighter has been fired after he was arrested Thursday, Dec. 6, and now faces charges of sexual exploitation of children and obscene Internet contact with a child, according to a report by the Barrow Journal.
