A member of the Georgia Army National Guard made the 911 call that started a recent training drill involving a simulated helicopter crash. Barrow County Emergency Services staff, deputies with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office and the Barrow County Airport Authority responded and worked the scene. “It was a simulated military helicopter crash with three patients in the helicopter,” Emergency Management Coordinator Penny Clack said in a news release. The drill was set up as an opportunity for military and civilian public safety personnel to work together in a simulated emergency. “Previous training conducted between agencies aided in emergency responders being able to mitigate the emergency scene without any issues,” Clack said. “This …

Robert Solomon joined the team of emergency services personnel in Barrow County in 2011 — he became a paramedic in 1992 following the death of a parent. “I was always intrigued by what paramedics do,” Solomon said. “Then my father passed away in front of me and I did not know what to do. I knew then I wanted to learn to help people.” Barrow County Emergency Services is spotlighting exceptional employees leading up to National EMS Week later this month, and Solomon is one of those team members. “With over 21 years’ experience as a paramedic, he brings a lot of knowledge and dedication to our team," Chief Dennis Merrifield said in a news release. “After all these years I still enjoy helping people that are sick or injured,” Solomon …

This past weekend, Barrow County Emergency Services personnel at Station 6 met with a distraught resident. “She stated her dog had run under her house and had gotten tangled up in some electrical wires,” Lieutenant Ernest Weant said in a news release. “Frustrated and not knowing what else to do to get her dog out she came to the firehouse and asked for help. We offered to go see what we could do to help.” When Weant, Lieutenant James Key, Firefighter Josh Shelby and Firefighter Teddy Brown arrived at the resident's home, they found a scared puppy unable to free himself from an entanglement. Due to the limited amount of space, there was no way a person could get under the house to free the dog. With the aid of tools carried on the engine, …

Firefighters with Barrow County Emergency Services were busy this past week bringing grass and woods fires throughout the county under control. “Many of the fires started near the roadways and spread quickly,” Lt. Scott Dakin, public information officer for the department, said in a news release. “In many situations these can be caused by improperly discarding of smoking materials as well as even parking a vehicle in the grass.” “We want to remind citizens that although there has been a lot of rain this winter, the vegetation is still dry. This can cause a fire to grow rapidly and in windy conditions it will grow even faster,” Dakin said. “Throwing a lit cigarette or even a recently extinguished cigarette onto the grass can result in fire…
