The Barrow County Board of Education has approved a calender for its 2013-14 school year, increasing the number of school days from 160 for the current school year to 170 days. The school system shared the following information in an informational post on the approved calendar: Students will head back to school following summer break on Aug. 7. The last day of school is May 15, 2014. Student holidays include the following, along with scheduled teacher planning days: According to information provided by the school system, middle and high school students will continue to start their school days before elementary students. Barrow County School among those selected as "High Progress Schools."
The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) released a list of Reward Schools on Oct. 31, 2012 and Winder Barrow Middle School made the list as a “High Progress” school. Winder Barrow Middle School has been recognized as a “High Progress School” by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE). The list of Reward Schools was published by the GaDOE on Oct. 31, 2012 and is part of the state’s waiver from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Members of the Barrow County Board of Education officially set the millage rate during Tuesday night's meeting, the Barrow Journal reports. While Barrow residents won't see an increase — the board set the rate at 18.5 mills, a rate that has remained the same for the past six years — two board members favor looking at an increase in the future. Barrow County Schools Superintendent has received her evaluation from the Barrow County Board of Education, which voted 6 to 3 Tuesday night to extend her contract for one year, according to a report by the Barrow Journal. The board held a called meeting for an executive session with board members Rickey Bailey, Will Dunn and Chairman Mark Still voting against renewing Creel's contract.
