Barrow County Car Dealership is Going Green

The Barrow Economic Development Council highlighted Akins Ford's efforts in a recent newsletter.

Akins Ford in Winder has jumped on the environmentally-friendly bandwagon.   According to the Barrow Economic Development Council, the business has committed to a full energy retrofit to save thousands of dollars each month on utility costs, predicting the conversion to energy efficiency will save as much as $150,000 annually. The dealership has replaced more than 90 skylights with a Domed Prismatic light to use daylight harvesting and more than 1,100 fixtures and 3,000 lamps to increase light levels and efficiency. HVAC units have been replaced with higher efficient systems and refuse oil furnaces have been added to reduce their natural gas consumption. This Date in U.S. History: Henry Ford Takes to the Road in Quadricycle

The first Ford hit the roads on this date in 1896.

Henry Ford motored out of the workshop behind his Detroit home in a car that was powered by a gasoline engine. Then 32, Ford had worked for two years on his Quadricycle, which ran on four wire wheels that resembled heavy-duty bicycle tires. It was steered with a tiller like a boat, and it had only two forward speeds and no reverse. The top speed was about 25 miles per hour.
