What Should Falcons Do Now?

Atlanta is again at a crossroads after a heartbreaking loss in the NFC Championship game. Share your thoughts on what the franchise should do moving forward.

The Atlanta Falcons went farther in the playoffs in 2013 than in any year since the 1998 season. Yet, there's still the taste of defeat. And that makes many Falcons fans wonder, "What does it take?" Sunday's 28-24 loss to San Francisco at the Georgia Dome was tough for Atlanta in that the Falcons, who were the top-seeded NFC playoff team, had a 17-0 lead in the first half. According to media reports, that made it the largest comeback in the history of the NFC Championship. That shows the Falcons' chief weaknesses -- defense, and a championship tradition. And those should be the team's top priorities to keep moving forward. Since the regime of Coach Mike Smith and GM Thomas Dimitroff took over in the 2008 season, the emphasis has been on …

Georgia vs. Nebraska: It's a New Year Day's Bowl, Baby!

Will the Bulldogs start 2013 with a win?

The Georgia Bulldogs were scheduled to hit Orlando on Wednesday to begin prepping in earnest for their New Year's Day Capital One Bowl matchup against the Big Ten's Nebraska. Coming off a heartbreaking SEC championship loss in which a few yards made the difference between playing for the national title and being passed over for a BCS berth, the Dawgs are looking to close out the 2012 season on a triumphant note. Some analysts think that's likely. "With the way that the Bulldogs left Atlanta, they are looking for redemption and there is not much that the Cornhuskers can do to stop it from being achieved," Ian Berg writes for Bleacher Report. Nebraska was shucked by the Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten title game, 70-31, leading Berg to …

Letter to the Editor: Not a New Practice to Change Rules to Prohibit Acceptance of African Americans into Institutions

In a letter to the editor, the vice president of the Barrow County NAACP discusses a recent nomination to the Winder-Barrow High School Hall of Fame.

Dear Editor,   We nominated Mr. Basketball himself, Mr. Jimmy Johnson, to the WBHS’s Hall of Fame because his 29.53 PPG scoring average is still the highest in Barrow County’s history. We thought that since Mr. Johnson was one of the many African Americans not allowed to attend the “Whites’Only” schools here in Barrow County, honoring his accomplishments would be a simple corrective gesture for us.   Even today what is morally right is sometimes not as easy as it should be.  We tried to contact all of the committee members (Sonny Morris, Jason Austin, Sammy Hale, John Mobley, Kay Turner, Elton Lynn, Ben Arms, Kevin Black, Hal Miller, Phil Bradberry, Justin Grant, Al Darby and Jerrie Hulsey).  Most members never responded back.  Of the 3 …

Georgia vs. Alabama: Who Will Be the SEC Champion?

If the Bulldogs beat Bama, they're likely headed to Miami to take on Notre Dame for the BCS title.

Well, here we are, on the brink of the SEC championship game, a game that many doubted the Georgia Bulldogs would reach this year, but which could propel them to the contest for the National Championship. The Bulldogs haven't won a national title since they beat Notre Dame in 1980, despite fielding one of the most consistently successful teams in the country. As Dan Wolken of USA Today put it, "There aren't many opportunities to put 30 years of frustration aside as a program, but Georgia is on the doorstep of one of them." To get in the door, the Bulldogs have to defeat No. 2 Alabama, no easy feat. Seth Emerson reports for the Ledger-Enquirer that the teams are pretty evenly matched, with Georgia bringing the nation's No. 1 quarterback in …

Buying SEC Championship Tickets Last Minute? Make Sure They're Real

The SEC, Alabama and the University of Georgia are warning fans to beware of counterfeit tickets to Saturday's sold-out SEC title game.

If somebody's trying to sell you a ticket to Saturday's SEC Championship game between Georgia and Alabama, take a close look. It had better have two strips of SEC holographic foil at the top and more foil on the championship logo in the middle. You ought to be able to see the SEC logo and name in the foil as you move the ticket around in your hand. If you can't, walk away. WRBL News reports that the SEC and the title-seeking teams are worried fans eager to get into the sold-out game might be scammed by counterfeiters. “It’s important to pay close attention to the details of the ticket, especially the holographic foil,” David Knight, director of championship ticket operations, said in a news release posted on the station's site. Are you …

Georgia vs. Georgia Tech: Triple Option, Round Two

For the Bulldogs, the hype about a possible national championship has begun.

Game time is noon Saturday in Athens. ESPN is providing game coverage.  The University of Georgia's Athletic Director Greg McGarity might have been prescient when he asserted earlier this season that Georgia Tech, and not Florida, is really the Bulldogs' biggest rival. Who would have predicted a month ago that so much would ride on this weekend's in-state matchup? Georgia survived the easier of its back-to-back triple-option challenges by defeating Georgia Southern last week. Now the Bulldogs, suddenly catapulted to No. 3 in the BCS standings, must withstand a visit from Georgia Tech before turning their attention to the SEC Championship game, likely against No. 2 Alabama. And then, maybe, the national title game? Not so fast, says Georgia…

Georgia Football: Auburn is One Last Hurdle

A victory Saturday should send the Bulldogs to the SEC championship game.

Auburn's not very good this year. They're still looking for an SEC win, and Georgia might not be the best place to find it. The Bulldogs, while romping through some rough patches, are ranked fifth in the country and need only beat the Tigers to wrap up the SEC East Division and play for the league championship. Of course, Bulldogs coach Mark Richt isn't preparing his team for a cakewalk. "I told the guys `Get your mind right, right now,"' Richt said in an Associated Press story earlier this week. "We know they're capable of knocking us off." The Dawgs will be bringing a depleted receiving corps to Auburn. Marlon Brown was reported out for the season earlier this week after tearing an ACL against Mississippi. And the Bulldogs lost Michael …

SEC on TV: Alabama-LSU Again Has BCS Title Implications

Checking the weekend's SEC football action.

College football is all about rivalries, but Alabama-LSU is moving into a class of its own. Saturday's game in Baton Rouge, La., is the third straight meeting between the teams that will have a direct impact on the No. 1 ranking and the eventual BCS national championship game. (Game time: 8 p.m., CBS). The top-ranked Crimson Tide (5-0 in SEC), of course, defeated No. 5 LSU (3-1 in SEC) for the BCS title in 2011, after the Tigers defeated Bama in the regular season and went on to win the SEC title. (Alabama edged out Oklahoma State in voting to earn the right to play for the 2011 title.) The Tide has not been seriously challenged in 2012, but LSU has lost to Florida and barely survived South Carolina. And again it bears mentioning that LSU …

Georgia vs. Mississippi Football: It's Homecoming!

The triumphant Bulldogs return to Athens, back in the driver's seat in the SEC Eastern Division.

The Bulldogs did what they needed against Florida last week in what henceforth shall be known as the Hot Potato Bowl, but it wasn't pretty. The game produced more ugly turnovers than a remedial pastry class. Credit Georgia's resurgent defense for Florida's sloppiness. After a public chewing out by safety Shawn Williams leading up to the game, the Bulldogs were relentless. Junior linebacker Jarvis Jones' performance alone was enough to help earn him semifinalist status for two national awards, the Maxwell and the Bednarik. The next step for Georgia's emotional squad, heading into Saturday's Homecoming game against Mississippi, is to provoke fewer yellow hankies from the officials, Mark Weiszer reports for the Morris News Service. The Dawgs …
