A Winder business owner was forced to call the Barrow County Sheriff's Office after a woman refused to leave his property, claiming it was "God's land" and she could be there if she so desired. As National Emergency Services week continues (May 19-25), Barrow County Fire and Emergency Services is honoring long-time paramedic Lt. Ernest Weant. The 16-year veteran of the department was first motivated to become a paramedic after pulling several children out of a burning car that had been involved in an accident. A Bethlehem woman claimed a neighbor threw her to the ground during a May 8 incident during which the neighbor's cat allegedly attacked her dog. According to the woman and her boyfriend, their dog escaped and ran to a nearby house. The woman said when she arrived at the house, she "observed the cat on the dog's snout." The woman subsequently claimed the cat's owner threw her to the ground as she was attempting to separate the animals. After retrieving the dog, the woman returned to her residence. A member of the Georgia Army National Guard made the 911 call that started a recent training drill involving a simulated helicopter crash. Barrow County Emergency Services staff, deputies with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office and the Barrow County Airport Authority responded and worked the scene. “It was a simulated military helicopter crash with three patients in the helicopter,” Emergency Management Coordinator Penny Clack said in a news release. Two suspects are facing charges in connections with a May 3 armed robbery outside a Winder convenience store. The Athens Banner-Herald reports Darren Michael Lamiotte, 20, and Kartez Jamal Fowler, 24, both of Athens, reportedly confronted two men leaving the Phillips 66 service station on North Broad Street and demanded money at gunpoint. The duo stole off with $1,500 and a cellphone, the report says. The Winder Police Department publicly released Lamiotte’s identity and photograph May 9, and he surrendered that night. Authorities are still searching for Fowler. Both suspects are facing charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault. A Winder man wanted by multiple agencies is now in custody. On May 15, On May 15, the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit located and arrested Jonathan Leonard Martin who was wanted out of Barrow and Gwinnett County. According to a press release from the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, Martin, of 410 Foxdale Road in Winder, was wanted out of Barrow County for a probation violation. In addition to the Barrow warrant, Martin had 15 outstanding warrants against him stemming from a May 4 incident involving the Georgia State Patrol.
