Obituary and Funeral Arrangements: Roy Frank Stovall, 44, of Monroe

A memorial service will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2013 and the Orchard Church in Loganville.

STOVALL - Roy Frank Stovall, age 44 of Monroe, passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2013.  A Memorial Service will be held at 4:30 PM on Friday, May 24, 2013 at The Orchard Church, 1950 Hwy 81 S, Loganville, GA 30052. Pastor Ben Cathey & Rev. Scott Sims will officiate.  The family will receive friends from 3 - 4:30 PM at the Church. Roy was born to the late Pamela Jeanette Court & Gilford Albert Stovall on June 10, 1968, in Houston, Texas. He was a master welder who traveled throughout the southeast welding natural gas pipeline. Roy was a member of The Orchard Church in Loganville, and enjoyed fishing, metal detecting and spending time with family and friends. ‘Angel’ of Corregidor Who Was Born Near Winder Dies at Age 98

Mildred Dalton Manning was the last survivor of 66 nurses who were taken into captivity by the Japanese in 1942.

Mildred Dalton Manning, who was born near Winder and was among the Army and Navy nurses of World War II known collectively as the Angels of Bataan and Corregidor, has died.  The New York Times reports Manning died Friday, March 8, in Hopewell, N.J. She was 98 and the last survivor of 66 nurses who were taken into captivity by the Japanese in 1942. The news outlet reports those nurses spent most of the war under guard at an internment camp for foreign nationals, where they faced near-starvation and disease while treating nearly 4,000 men, women and children. “I joined the Army to see the world,” she told The Courier News of Bridgewater, N.J. “And what I saw was a prison camp.” The New York Times reports Manning was born July 11, 1914, near …

Area Seventh Grader Kajal Patel Loses Battle with Immune Disorder

Athens Academy students are wearing red Tuesday in honor of the seventh grader's memory.

An area seventh-grade girl whose lifelong battle with an immune disorder inspired a world-record-breaking regional Marrow-Thon last spring has died. Athens Academy Headmaster Bob Chambers told parents the news about Kajal Patel's death in an email on Monday: Sincerely, J. Robert Chambers, Jr. Headmaster More than 4,000 individuals registered as possible bone marrow donors with Be The Match during a seven-day period in 2012. The Marrow-Thon yielded multiple matches for Kajal, but she waited for her health to improve before undergoing the procedure last month. Winder Councilman Charlie Eberhart Loses Battle with Brain Cancer

The Barrow Journal reports Eberhart, a longtime member of the Winder City Council, died early Wednesday.

Winder City Councilman Charlie Eberhart died early Wednesday after a year-long battle with brain cancer, the Barrow Journal reports. Former County Commissioner Dies

William J. Hutchins, 63, was a member of the Georgia Farm Bureau and the Barrow County Farm Bureau board of directors.

A former member of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners, William J. Hutchins, 63, died Saturday.  The Gainesville Times reports Hutchins, a Barrow County farmer and advocate for agriculture, died from lung problems.  A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. today at Midway United Methodist Church in Auburn. Visitation, Funeral Services Set for Former County Commissioner

Visitation and funeral services have been set for William Healan Jr., a former county commissioner who died Dec. 26, 2011. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Smith Funeral Home, and funeral service will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, Dec. 30, in Smith Memory Chapel, with Rev. Wally Hostetter officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home has posted an obituary online with a photo gallery and online guest book.

Former Barrow Commissioner Dies

The Athens Banner-Herald reports William Healan Jr. died Monday, Dec. 26, 2011, following an extended illness.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports William Healan Jr., a former Barrow County commissioner, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2011. A lifelong resident of Barrow County, the newspaper reports Healan was a star athlete at Winder High School before graduating from the University of Georgia and UGA's School of Law. He served as the county attorney from the early 1980s to the early 1990s, and later served a term as a county commissioner.  Healan is survived by his wife Patti Healan, sons Billy Healan and Mike Healan, daughters Cindy Robarge and Erin Kendall, and seven grandchildren. Smith Memory Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Funeral Services Set for Lifelong Member of Appalachee Baptist Church

Funeral services for Mrs. Opal Peevy Parks set for Thursday.

Mrs. Opal Peevy Parks, age 82, of Hoschton, passed away on Monday, Oct. 10. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. Mrs. Parks was born Aug. 12, 1929 in Lawrenceville. She was a homemaker and lifelong member of Appalachee Baptist Church in Auburn. She enjoyed traveling and being with her friends and family. Mrs. Parks was preceded in death by her husband, J. W. Parks; son, Jack W. Parks; parents, Olin and Lois Peevy; brother, Rev. Robert Peevy; sisters, Dorothy Reynolds, Sue Griffin and Barbara Emerson.  She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Barbara Parks of Buford; daughter-in-law, Connie Parks of Hoschton; grandchildren, Amy and Josh Fulmer of Ft. Barrow County Sheriff's Office Sergeant to be Laid to Rest Wednesday

Sgt. John Petty, 48, died of natural causes while off-duty Saturday, Oct. 8.

A member of the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011. The sheriff's office reports Sgt. John Petty, 48, died of natural causes while off-duty. Petty supervised the Crime Scene Investigations Unit and was responsible for the security and processing of evidence in all criminal cases.  He joined the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office in July 2010 with more than 24 years of experience in law enforcement, having devoted his entire career to the service of others. The Athens Banner-Herald reports Petty’s wife, Yvonne Petty, also works as a deputy for the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office. "John was a premier example to his fellow employees and will be missed," a news release on his death stated. …
