Multiple agencies participated in the recent training drill at the Barrow County Airport.
A member of the Georgia Army National Guard made the 911 call that started a recent training drill involving a simulated helicopter crash. Barrow County Emergency Services staff, deputies with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office and the Barrow County Airport Authority responded and worked the scene. “It was a simulated military helicopter crash with three patients in the helicopter,” Emergency Management Coordinator Penny Clack said in a news release. The drill was set up as an opportunity for military and civilian public safety personnel to work together in a simulated emergency. “Previous training conducted between agencies aided in emergency responders being able to mitigate the emergency scene without any issues,” Clack said. “This …
The Athens Banner-Herald reports one of the suspects recently surrendered but authorities are still searching for the second man.
Two suspects are facing charges in connections with a May 3 armed robbery outside a Winder convenience store. The Athens Banner-Herald reports Darren Michael Lamiotte, 20, and Kartez Jamal Fowler, 24, both of Athens, reportedly confronted two men leaving the Phillips 66 service station on North Broad Street and demanded money at gunpoint. The duo stole off with $1,500 and a cellphone, the report says. The Winder Police Department publicly released Lamiotte’s identity and photograph May 9, and he surrendered that night. Authorities are still searching for Fowler. Both suspects are facing charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault. Barrow County Emergency Services is spotlighting its exceptional employees leading up to National EMS Week from May 19 through 25.
Lieutenant Michael Barnes with Barrow County Emergency Services was honored Tuesday, May 14, during a board of commissioners meeting. Barnes was recently recognized at the annual Georgia Emergency Medical Services Region 10 Awards Banquet as Paramedic of the Year. “Lieutenant Barnes is and has been a vital part of our organization and truly puts his heart and soul into public safety as a whole,” Barrow County Emergency Services Chief Dennis Merrifield said in a news release. “His countless hours of dedication and commitment to our service make him well deserving to be recognized as our paramedic of the year.” Barnes began his service with Barrow County in 2003 as a firefighter and emergency medical technician and was named rookie of …
