Coach's comments

  • Mike Cavey, head coach for Apalachee's baseball team
“We lost 1-0, but I was real pleased with how we pitched and fielded. I threw seven pitchers each an inning and they did well. We were a hit away from winning or tying the game. We need to work on our offense as we head into our opener this Wednesday at Peachtree Ridge. Hopefully we can continue to pitch and play defense well, and our hitters will come around."
  • Ben Arms, head coach for Winder-Barrow's girls soccer team
"The WBHS girl's soccer team is returning nine of 11 starters from last year's 15-3 season so we should be very competitive in our region. I have a quite a few girls that played together on some good club teams this past fall so this gives the team good core to start. The key to our season will be if some of our veteran players can step up offensively. We are moving players around these first few games to see if they can add that certain spark. The region got stronger with the loss of Monroe Area and the addition of a good soccer school in Flowery Branch. This will certainly make the road to playoffs more difficult for both Apalachee and Winder-Barrow."
  • Derek Hon, head coach for Winder-Barrow's boys tennis team
"The WBHS boys' tennis team had a great week by beating Jackson County 5-0. Our singles players showed much improvement over the previous week by winning convincingly in all three matches. Jarod Frost (No. 1 singles) won 8-0, Tyler Tippens (No. 2 singles) won 8-4 and Colby Woodall (No. 3 singles) won 8-1. Our doubles teams also performed well, even though struggling a bit at first. The No. 1 doubles team of Efa Osuegbu and John Arnold won 8-6, and the No. 2 doubles team won 8-6."
  • Scott Bates, head coach for Apalachee's girls soccer team
"The defense continues to play well, having not allowed a goal thus far. We continue to score multiple goals, which is nice. However our competition will only get tougher from here and we still have to play better as a team!"
  • Dan Woschitz, head coach for Apalachee's boys tennis team
"The 2011 Apalachee boys' tennis team returns five lettermen from last season's 7-13 squad. The Cats (will) be led by a trio of two-year letterman: junior, Alex Soubannarath (2010 honorable mention 8AAAA singles — 13-22 varsity career record); senior, Jamie Heglund (two time Region 8AAAA honorable mention doubles player — 22-16); and senior, doubles specialist Aaron Brown (18-7).  The other returning lettermen are senior Michael Duchesne (10-11) and sophomore James Alexander (5-5), (and) will be counted upon for leadership and winning team points."
