Coaches' comments

Mike Cavey, head coach for Apalachee's baseball team
"We were down 3-0 on Johnson with three unearned runs, but we had a big inning and took the lead and added some more late. Derek Bryan did a real nice job of coming on in relief of starter Caleb Austin. Clint Ashe pitched the last inning and recorded the save. We had a 4-1 lead on Central and gave up four runs in the top of the sixth to go down 5-4. We could not score in the sixth or seventh and we lost. Ryan Shorter pitched a great 5 1/3 innings, but was credited with the loss. We seem to be improving each game, but we have to learn how to hold on to leads and not make mistakes.”

Scott Bates, head coach for Apalachee's girls soccer team
“The level of our competition has stepped up, but unfortunately our play hasn't. Our girls are still playing very hard, but now they have to start playing hard as a team.”

Dan Woschitz, head coach for Apalachee's boys tennis team
The Wildcats opened up their schedule on Thursday, Feb. 24 at home vs. Rockdale County. The match was tied 2-2 when the visiting Bulldogs completed a sweep of the singles matches for a 3-2 win. Apalachee swept the doubles with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles by Jamie Heglund and Brandon Tovar, while Aaron Brown and Lee Vue also won No. 2 doubles in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. The Wildcats received some solid play from No. 2 singles player Micheal Duchense and No. 1 singles player Alex Soubannarath."

Ryan McDeermond, head coach for Apalachee’s girls tennis team
“Thursday evening we played Rockdale Co. at the Winder YMCA. We lost the match 4-1 with our lone win coming from our No. 1 doubles team of Paige Shearer and Sara Cole. Paige and Sara played Gabbi Burch and Keeyah Byrd of Rockdale. They won their match in two sets with two tiebreakers for a match score of 7-6 (7-5); 7-6 (7-5). We also won an exhibition mach played by Rochelle Ridlehoover and Amber Stroup versus Brooke Tyron and Aliyah Byrd. They played an eight-game proset and won 8-5. Basically Rockdale fielded a tough team like they always do. I would have liked to have them later in the season when we had some more matches under our belt but scheduling just falls into place however it happens to works out. I thought we played really well up at the net during our doubles match and our No. 2 doubles played a close match but fell just short. Our singles matches were fought against really talented opponents.  Rockdale's singles players all featured really powerful attacking serves that were tough to get in a point against. Their players also play with an extreme level of control that we just couldn't match. They put the ball exactly where they wanted to, which was a place where our players could not get to it to return the ball."

Derek Hon, head coach for Winder-Barrow's boys tennis team
“The WBHS boys tennis team had a great week last week. We played Cedar Shoals on Wednesday and won 5-0. We played Mountain View on Friday and won 3-2. On both days we had strong performances from our singles players. Jarod Frost, our No.  1 singles player, looked particularly dominant in both matches. Our doubles teams struggled a bit, but they are young and learning how to adjust their strategy during a match. We are now 4-1 overall and have Apalachee and Clarke Central on the schedule this week.”
