POLL: Should Congress Pass 'If You Like Your Policy, You Can Keep It' Bill?

Lawmakers in both parties have introduced legislation to make good on President Obama's pledge regarding health care coverage.

"If you like your health care plan, you'll be able to keep your health care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what." - President Barack Obama, 2009

"Now, if you had one of these plans before the Affordable Care Act came into law and you really liked that plan, what we said was you can keep it if it hasn't changed since the law passed." - President Barack Obama, 2013
Was there an "if" when President Obama repeatedly pledged that Americans would be able to keep their existing health care plan? Critics say no and lawmakers are looking for a way to make good on the President's pledge.

According to the New York Daily News, the House of Representatives may vote as early as next week on a bill that would allow insurers to continue selling policies in effect on Jan. 1, 2013, regardless of whether or not those policies meet the coverage requirements specified under Obamacare.

The "If You Like Your Policy, You Can Keep It" bill was introduced by Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.). Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu has also introduced similar legislation.

The proposed legislation comes as millions of Americans have received cancellation notices for health insurance policies which do not meet Obamacare standards.

The administration has sought to clarify President Obama's oft-repeated pledge regarding the ability to keep existing coverage. On Nov. 4, in a speech to the Organizing for Action group, President Obama explained, "What we said was, you could keep it, if it hadn't changed since the law was passed, but if the insurance company changes it, then what we're saying is they've got to change it to a higher standard."

Are you satisfied with the President's clarification? Do you believe lawmakers should pass legislation which would allow Americans to keep their existing health insurance coverage?
