Your odds of being struck by lightning in any given year are one in 500,000. The odds of being hit by falling airplane parts are one in 10 million. The odds that a vending machine will fall on you and kill you: one in 112 million. As unlikely as these occurrences may be, the odds of one of these events happening to you are far better than the one in 259 million chance you'll win Mega Millions. Still, millions of players will flock to lottery retailers to snatch up tickets for big jackpots such as the estimated $586 million top prize for the Dec. 17 drawing.
