POLL: Can Carter Get Democrats Back in the Georgia Governor's Mansion?

Democratic State Sen. Jason Carter, grandson of Jimmy Carter, plans to challenge Gov. Nathan Deal next year.

Another offspring of a high profile Democrat is making news in Georgia.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports State Sen. Jason Carter, grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, will challenge Gov. Nathan Deal next year in a bid to become the first Democrat to win the Georgia governor's race in 12 years.

Carter joins U.S. Senate candidate Michelle Nunn, daughter of former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn, as the second Georgia candidate following in the footsteps of a politically successful family member.

Carter, according to the AJC, "pitches himself as a fiscal conservative who will revamp an education funding system he derides as a 'shell game' and restore trust in the government."

Politics1 lists former executive Peter Aman and Ex. State Sen. Connie Stokes as possible primary challengers for Carter. The AJC, however, indicates Stokes is expected to challenge Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle instead.

On the Republican side, State School Superintendent John Barge and Dalton Mayor David Pennington are expected to challenge Deal in the primary.

Do you believe Carter can defeat Deal or the other potential GOP nominees? Let us know in the comments or vote in our online poll. Note: This is not a scientific poll. It is for entertainment purposes only.
