Winder Council Names New Fire Chief

Matt Whiting is Winder’s new chief of the .

Mayor Chip Thompson presented Whiting with his new badge during Tuesday night’s heavily attended city council meeting.

“Matt Whiting has proved himself to be a tremendous asset to the City of Winder,” Thompson said.

Many of Whiting’s firefighters were present as his wife pinned his new badge on his uniform.

Whiting began working part-time for the fire department in 1992 and was promoted to captain in 1999. According to the city’s website, Whiting is only the eighth person to serve as chief of the fire department since its inception in 1908.

The City Council hosted a party in his honor following Tuesday’s meeting.
