Voters to Decide on Sunday Sale of Packaged Alcohol within the County

Barrow County commission chairman Daniel Yearwood Jr. broke a tie Tuesday night, voting in favor of bringing packaged Sunday alcohol sales before voters.

Three commissioners voted against a motion to place the issue of the sale of packaged beer and wine within the county on Sundays on the November ballot — Eva Elder, Isaiah Berry and Billy Parks voted in opposition.

Yearwood broke the 3-3 tie, voting with Larry Joe Wilburn, SteveWorley and Ben Hendrix to place the issue before voters.

“We’ve had several cities and municipalities in the county go ahead and put this on the agenda for the November elections,” Yearwood said, referring to the cities of Auburn and Winder in particular. “I don’t want to leave out retailers in the county if they say, ‘Why are you penalizing us just because we’re in the county?’”

“I certainly think the people have a right to decide themselves,” said Hendrix, who made the motion, which was seconded by Wilburn.

Yearwood said Walmart and Publix are two retailers that would be affected by the decision.
