Rep. Terry England Receives Legislative Leadership Award for Anti-violence Work

England helped secure a $300,000 increase for family violence centers in Georgia and provided funding to better staff the state's Sexual Offender Review Board.

The Georgia Commission on Family Violence presented an award last week to Rep. Terry England.

Executive Director Greg Loughlin presented England, who represents portions of Barrow County in the state house, with a Legislative Leadership Award last week at a reception in Atlanta.

England received the award for securing a $300,000 increase for family violence centers in Georgia and providing funding to better staff the Sexual Offender Review Board. Shannon Willis-Clark, executive director of in Winder, helped present the award.

"I met Rep. England two years ago at the Capitol," Willis-Clark said during the reception. "In my experience legislators listen but unfortunately do not respond or follow up on information. Rep. England is the exception. He called Peace Place and requested additional information about program needs and gaps that exist; he also asked about the impact proposed legislation would have.

"I truly believe he was instrumental in securing funding for our programs," she continued. "He is known throughout Barrow County as being a true and honest voice of the citizens. It is an honor to work with him."

The Georgia Commission on Family Violence is a state agency created by the Georgia General Assembly in 1992 to develop a comprehensive state plan for ending family violence in Georgia.

Does the reporter know where this $300,000 came from?

I have had the opportunity to talk to Rep. England regarding Domestic Violence issues on several occasions, when specific laws or issues have come up in Georgia. He has always been remarkably supportive, especially as it relates to ensuring we have the necessary resources to properly fight against family violence. Hopefully this will do a little bit to alleviate the flak that he caught from his (somewhat ill-conceived) speech on stillbirth and livestock that was all over the Internet for a while.
