Saturday Mail Delivery by U.S. Postal Service Could End This August

The U.S. Postal Service reportedly will end Saturday mail delivery in August 2013, but would continue to deliver packages on Saturdays.
According to an ABC News report, the agency is making the move to curb financial losses. The plan would save the agency about $2 billion annually, the report says.
Also, delivery to post office boxes would continue on Saturdays, while post offices now open on Saturdays would remain open that day.

Over the past several years, the U.S. Postal Service has advocated shifting to a five-day delivery schedule for mail and packages. Though an independent agency, the service still is subject to congressional control.

It was not immediately clear how the service could eliminate Saturday mail without congressional approval, ABC News said.
A formal announcement is expected later Wednesday.
