Residents Oppose Demolition of Old Granite Hotel

The Gwinnett Daily Post reports a group of residents plans to attend Tuesday's meeting of the Winder City Council, where members are set to vote on which company will handle the demolition.

A group of residents who oppose the demolition of the Old Granite Hotel in downtown Winder plans to attend Tuesday's Winder City Council meeting to voice their opinion, the Gwinnett Daily Post reports.

Council members are set to vote Tuesday, Dec. 6, on which company will handle the demolition of the 112-year-old structure, a project that will cost the city $200,000 in addition to the more than $400,000 the city spent stabilizing and salvaging the building since purchasing it in 2004.

Bill Summerour, a lifelong Barrow County resident, sees the 112-year-old building as an opportunity, rather than financial burden. Summerour has voiced his opinion on the plans before — he attended . 

“I’d hate to see the hotel torn down just for new architecture,” he said during the meeting.

Winder resident Darell Person opposes the idea of using the site for a city park.

"I don't get why the city wants to tear down the last standing granite hotel in Georgia and make a big mud hole that's going to be there for months," Person told the Gwinnett Daily Post.
