Photo Contest Winners Recognized at City Council Meeting

Council members approved the purchase of a snow blade and salt and sand spreader.

At Auburn’s City Council work shop meeting Thursday night, Tracie Pollard announced the winners of the “Through Your Eyes” photo contest.

Residents were asked to submit photos of scenes from around the city, and the photos were posted to Auburn’s Facebook page. The winners were determined by the number of “likes” each picture received between Jan. 4 through 24.

Elysee Fancher took first place in the youth division for her entry "Rainbow in the Clouds.”

Josh Rowan won for five pictures, including his first place photo “From the Woods of Shackelford.”

The pictures will be on display for public viewing for the next three months at Dakota’s Grill and Bar in Auburn.

The city council voted on eight items during the meeting.

  1. The council approved the rezoning for the Sunbelt Asphalt Plant at 301 Parks Mill Road from M-1 to M-2 and the special-use permit needed to build a plant at the location.
  2. Approval was given for the conceptual plan for the Sixth Street park.
  3. Carter Watkins Associates Inc. was approved to complete architectural requirements for the RR/Perry Rainey Institute Building. Their services will be used to finish the Community Development Block Grant process.
  4. A.A. Drilling & Blasting was approved to remove rock from Parks Mill at a cost of $12,000. The council also voted to fund $1200 for seismic imaging to monitor homes in the surrounding area and approved $37,446.11 for stormwater structure.
  5. The council approved the purchase of a salt and sand spreader and a snow blade for the city. They will attach to a truck the city already owns. The $8,786.25 cost will come from the city's roads budget.
  6. Ray Campbell with Municipal Building Inspection Services North Inc. was appointed building inspector, and Paul Simonton, of P.C. Simonton & Associates, was appointed city engineer.
  7. The council voted to adopt the Northeast Regional Solid Waste Management Plan 2009 Short Term Work Program. This is required for the city to apply for loans and grants through the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
  8. The council approved $75,000 to complete the Pony League Baseball Field at Parks Mill. This funding will come from the Barrow County SPLOST fund.
