Winder Residents, Meet Your New Mayor

The city website now features a welcome message and bio for newly sworn-in Mayor David Maynard.

While may be no stranger to the Winder City Council, his back story and vision for the city might not be widely known.

With just two weeks under his belt since his , a brief synopses of his life history, his visions for the city and its residents, and the inspiration that brought him to this new role have all been spelled out on the city’s website.

With a family history that dates back to the 1700’s — even before the lines for Barrow County had ever been conceptualized or drawn — the Maynard family has maintained ties to this area. Mayor Maynard himself has lived within Winder city limits since the age of five. He found a sense of duty to his community at an early age as a Boy Scout, never forgetting his oath “… I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country … to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight …”

A graduate of , Maynard married his high school sweetheart, Happy. The couple welcomed two daughters, Alice and Laura, who have since married, welcomed children of their own and enjoy careers as a doctor and a teacher, respectively. In 1984, Maynard established his own , which in the years since has transitioned from residential construction to commercial and industrial, due in large part to a growing demand in both the city of Winder and Barrow County for quality industrial parks and commercial centers.

Deeply involved in his community through service to his church and a number of local nonprofits and schools, Maynard has also served as past president of both the Winder Kiwanis Club and the Barrow County Builders Association. He has held a seat at the Winder City Council table as council member at large since his election in 2007. Just last summer, Maynard announced his intentions to run for the office of mayor of Winder and in November 2011, residents voted him into his newest role.

According to his mayor’s welcome on the city of Winder website, Maynard intends to work closely with the members of the council, city employees and administrative staff to provide the highest quality of services to the residents of Winder that the city budget will allow. Over the course of the next four years, the new mayor plans to seek the support and input of residents to learn what their vision for the city might be. Three of his focuses will include maintaining quality infrastructure for current needs and future growth, encouraging a beautiful community with streetscapes all residents of Winder can be proud of in the coming years and preserving a historic downtown district complete with thriving businesses and that signature “small town feel”.
